Homeowner Spotlight
When Twayne first considered homeownership in 2017, he came to NeighborWorks Western Pennsylvania to complete a homebuyer education course and learn about first-time buyer assistance. While he didn’t move forward with purchasing a home four years ago, he returned for education and one-on-one counseling last year. This summer, he became a homeowner. Down-payment assistance was an important factor in the purchase. Read more
Twayne, pictured with his wife, Lavonda, said one of the primary reasons they pursued homeownership was for their children. “We want them to feel comfortable, safe, and secure at home,” he explained.
Congratulations, De'Shawna!
Congratulations to De’Shawna McHenry, homeownership counselor, for recently passing the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) certification exam. The comprehensive test for housing counselors covers topics ranging from financial management and homeownership responsibilities to fair housing laws. The certification program supports professional standards for housing counseling.

Foreclosure-related Eviction Bans Extended
The moratorium on foreclosures of homes whose owners have federally backed mortgages expired on July 31. However, the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development extended the ban on foreclosure-related evictions for homeowners who have single-family mortgage insured by the Federal Housing Administration. That moratorium, which now ends Sept. 30, 2021, excludes legally vacant or abandoned properties. The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), Federal Housing Finance Agency (which oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac), and Veterans Administration announced similar extensions to their bans on foreclosure-related evictions.

If you’re worried about making your next mortgage payment, schedule a free appointment with one of our homeownership counselors. Start by creating a customer account, so you can set up an in-take appointment.

A decision by the Supreme Court on August 26 nullified the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) moratorium on evictions of renters who can't make their housing payments in counties experiencing substantial and high levels of COVID-19 transmission in the community. If you’re struggling to keep up with your rent or utilities, please visit our Resources webpage to learn about assistance programs.
