SENATOR JIM WELCH’S APRIL 2018 NEWSLETTER
Greetings,

Welcome to my newsletter. I hope that this will serve as an effective way to keep the residents and stakeholders of the Hampden District informed of the work being done in the Massachusetts Senate and across the Commonwealth.

If I can ever be of assistance to you or your family, please contact me at my district office.
I handed in my nomination papers in April, officially getting my name on the ballot. I'm proud to serve the Hampden district in the State Senate and will be seeking re-election to continue working for more accessible health care, a stronger Western Massachusetts, and much more! If you would like to join my campaign please reach out to Hannah Bertrand at  hannah@jimwelch.com.

Legislative News

April was another busy month in the Senate. The Legislature passed a Bond Bill that would invest $200 million into local road and bridge repair projects. For the fiscal year 2019 local apportionment included:
  • $1,334,849 for Chicopee
  • $3,682,135 for Springfield
  • $849,092 for West Springfield
The Senate passed a supplemental budget that included funds to help continue the extremely successful Healthy Incentives Program and to help Regional Transit Authorities avoid budget shortfalls.
Legislation has come up concerning continuity of care for multiple sclerosis treatment. I had the pleasure of meeting with a dedicated multiple sclerosis advocate in the district about support for Senate Bill 539. You can read more about the bill, the advocate, and my support here.

Finally, the Senate passed Senate Bill 2380, An Act establishing a student loan bill of rights. This bill puts in place measures to protect student borrowers from predatory student loans.
