Legislative News

On the heels of a busy January, the Senate kept up its pace in February, quickly acting to pass legislation and approving critical funding.

The Senate voted to pass Senate Bill 2279, An Act providing for capital facility repairs and improvements for the Commonwealth. Included in this bill was $45 million in funding for the construction of the Springfield Police Department's new headquarters. The bill was signed by Governor Baker.

The Senate passed a Supplemental Budget that will provide $15 million in funding to school districts educating students from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands who were displaced by hurricanes Maria and Irma. The supplemental budget was signed by Governor Baker.
Additionally, the Senate took a key step towards improving access to confidential health care by passing The PATCH ACT. This bill

In response to heavy criticism form the Senate and an oversight hearing, the Group Insurance Commission decided to back off of its plan to reduce the number of health insurance plans offered to state employees.
District News
We also saw numerous exciting developments in the district including:
• Additional bond funding for capital facility repairs went to to Springfield Technology Park ($4.5 million), The Town of West Springfield ($500k), and The Paramount Theatre ($2.5 million).
• MGM Springfield hosted a career fair and continues to look for qualified applicants to fill out its current job openings. For more info about employment click here.
• The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts held a Legislative Panel in Springfield to discuss budget and legislative priorities.

Located at 44 Oak St., Indian Orchard, MA 01151 on the 4th Wednesday from 1pm - 3pm.
