This March the legislature kicked it into high gear with numerous important committee hearings. On March 22nd I testified in front of the Joint Committee on Education in support of the PROMISE Act. The PROMISE Act will help fix our broken education funding formula and help give our schools the resources they need to fully support our students.

Legislative News

With bills filed and committee assignments set, March saw the advancement of some critical pieces of legislation through the Senate.

The Senate passed An Act relative to abusive practices to change sexual orientation and gender identity in minors. This bill will protect LGBTQ youth by banning the harmful and baseless practice of conversion therapy in Massachusetts.

Additionally, the Senate passed legislation that repeals the ineffective 'Cap on Kids' policy. With the passage of An Act to Lift the Cap on Kids, the Senate has moved to provide benefits for upwards of 8,700 children who were originally ruled ineligible.
In addition to bills, the Senate also passed a supplemental budget to address some funding deficiencies that came up during this fiscal year. One of the most pressing matters we tackled was a shortfall in federal fuel assistance (LIHEAP) allocation. In response, the Senate voted to add $30 million to the LIHEAP program, to protect our state's most vulnerable residents during the winter.

District News

We also saw numerous exciting developments in the district including:
• I wrote an Op-Ed in The Republican detailing the need to build a new courthouse in Springfield. The wait for adequate trial court infrastructure in Hampden County has to end or our residents will continue to lack proper access to the justice system.
West Springfield hosted it annual Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Day ceremony. I was honored to attend and show my support.
