The Fifth Sunday of Lent

This week at Holy Spirit Parish, we are busy preparing for the high holy days of our liturgical year. It is easy to skip over these last few weeks of Lent as we become preoccupied with Easter preparations. At home, we might be planning meals for family, booking holiday travel, and coloring Easter eggs with kids; at church, we are printing worship aids, planning liturgies, preparing decorations, etc. These are all good and important things, but if we fast-forward through these last two weeks of Lent, we risk missing out on the great richness of the these days.

In this weekend's Gospel, our Lord exhorts the scribes and Pharisees not to condemn; and the women caught in adultery to sin no more. These are two great projects during these final weeks of our annual itinerary of conversion - to stop casting stones, and to turn away from our sins and towards Christ.

A Message from Patrick Jekanowski
I have accepted a full time Music Director Job for a Catholic Church in Maryland. My last day here will be Sunday, May 1. I am grateful for my time in Dubuque and I wish you all the best. This move brings me close to my family and friends all on the east coast and is the next step in the journey. Again, I wish you all the best. To quote Fr. Mike, “please pray for me, I am praying for you.”

Peace in Christ,
Patrick J.
Lenten Almsgiving
One of the three pillars of Lent is the practice of almsgiving. This can be done in a variety of ways. One way to practice almsgiving is to participate in the parish almsgiving project. This year we will be supporting two local initiatives - People in Need and Dubuque Rescue Mission. Please be generous in your giving. You can use the pre-labeled envelopes available at the entrances to our churches or return your contribution to the office or in the collection in an envelope marked "Almsgiving Project."

Parish YouTube Channel
Please remember that if you are staying home from Mass due to illness or are otherwise looking to enrich your prayer life, make sure to check out our parish YouTube channel. There you can find live-streamed Masses as well as Morning Prayer, Night Prayer, and Adoration.
Please plan to join us for our 4th session, Thursday April 7th, 6:30-8pm in Kriebs Hall at Sacred Heart. Our topic this week will be “Building Our Relationships through service to our Parish” featuring our very own parishioner Deacon Jim Thill. We hope you'll come!

We will have regular class next Wednesday, April 6th at 6:30pm at Cathedral. Please mark your calendars - since we did have a day that we canceled due to bad weather, April 27th will now be a makeup class. Our final Mass for the year will be on Wednesday, May 4th.

First Eucharist Preparation
A reminder that the First Eucharist retreat is coming up on Wednesday, April 13th at 6:30pm in the Cathedral Center. Parent(s) and student should attend. We ask that all parishioners keep those preparing for this sacrament in their prayers! If you have any questions, contact Cassie at

Confirmation Preparation
Our final session will be on Sunday, April 10th at 9:15am in the Sacred Heart church basement. Confirmation sponsors are encouraged to attend with the candidate. We will do a walk through of the Sacrament of Confirmation that morning. Please contact Cassie at if you have any questions.
