The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

This week at Holy Spirit Parish, we have left the Christmas season and are now beginning the time before Lent which we know as "Ordinary Time." We likely think of 'ordinary' as meaning 'unexceptional,' but the title we give this season, also known as tempus per annum ("time throughout the year"), is not ordinary in that sense. Rather, Ordinary Time is so called because the weeks are 'ordered,' 'numbered,' or 'ruled' (ordinalis) throughout the year.

There is a certain rhythm and routine to these weeks between Epiphany and Lent that does reflect our 'ordinary,' day-to-day lives. The liturgical color of the season - green - reminds us that this is a time of growth.

"Ordinary Time is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ. The goal, toward which all of history is directed, is represented by the final Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe." (USCCB)

Let us resist the temptation to look at these weeks as 'unexceptional,' but rather, let us endeavor to make extraordinary progress along our journey to holiness.
Holy Spirit Parish - In the News!
We were pleased to have the Telegraph Herald feature the windows of Sacred Heart in their series on Dubuque's stained-glass treasures. Thanks to the TH and to the parishioners who shared their knowledge of Sacred Heart's history for the piece - it is well worth a read!
