The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

This week at Holy Spirit Parish, we're still kind of thinking about Christmas. While find ourselves several weeks into Ordinary Time, next week the church will celebrate - on February 2nd - the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Also known as Candlemas, this feast day recalls the obedience of the Holy Family as they brought the Divine Infant to the temple to present and consecrate Him to the Lord.

Candles and the blessing of candles are associated with this feast, recalling the words of Simeon the prophet who at our Lord's Presentation recognized that the Christ Child would be "a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel." (Lk. 2:32)

Keeping with the theme of light, some traditions for Candlemas include lighting a blessed candle in the home during some time of prayer, or even keeping the Christmas lights lit until February 2nd, or re-lighting them for this feast.
Blessed Candles
Wednesday, February 2nd is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas. Candles for church and home use are traditionally blessed on this day. Blessed Candles will be available to take home next weekend, February 5-6, at each church. A small donation for each box of candles will help the parish to cover the cost.

Blessing of Throats
Thursday, February 3rd is the Memorial of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr. At Holy Spirit Parish, the traditional Blessing of Throats associated with St. Blaise will take place after all weekend Masses on February 5-6. Stay after Mass to receive this blessing of protection against all ailments of the throat!

Parish YouTube Channel
Please remember that if you are staying home from Mass due to illness or are otherwise looking to enrich your prayer life, make sure to check out our parish YouTube channel. There you can find live-streamed Masses as well as Morning Prayer, Night Prayer, and Adoration.
Please pray for the more than 30 women who will be participating in the Archdiocesan Women's Conference this Saturday at our parish, and the many many others who are live-streaming the event at their own parish sites or from home.
