Members of the Orleans Parish School Board:

The organizations listed below are united in their support for the approval of a uniform funding formula for Orleans Parish Schools as recommended by the Working Group mandated by the 2015 Legislature. We urge the Orleans Parish School Board to approve the Working Group's recommendations and to implement the formula disbursement for the 2016-17 school year.

We are keenly aware that unification of Orleans Parish schools will not be possible if differentiated funding is not adopted. The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education’s recent decision to have our duly elected School Board to approve the levels of funding should give further impetus to the unification of our local school system. We urge your approval!

While we support the distribution of funds as recommended by the Working Group, we do have concerns about the implementation. We urge the Board’s careful consideration of policies that will ensure transparency, equity, and accountability across all schools in the expenditure of the MFP monies. We urge your vigilant oversight of fund expenditures and regular audits to give the public confidence that the funds are being properly used.

A true story of resilience for public education in New Orleans should conclude with a single high performing school district governed by members of this community. We hope your leadership will provide a path toward unification, equity in funding and transparent accountability.

Thank you for your consideration.
