MY LEGENDARY SANDWICH GUIDE

HAPPY FRIDAY!

I have always adored making sandwiches. At certain points in my life, I thought about opening a sandwich shop. There’s something I love about selecting each and every ingredient to curate a masterpiece. I love finding the best bread, the crunchiest lettuce, and a cheese that works well with the other ingredients. When you put your whole heart into it, you’ll come up with something so memorable that you could accidentally get engaged if you’re not careful. Here are some of my favorites.

I have always loved a French Dip. The combination of roast beef, crusty bread, gooey cheese, and a dipping sauce is out of this world. I have enjoyed them at restaurants but never made one myself, so Fernanda and I set out to conquer it. Frankly, it’s not as hard as it looks! You have to use a recipe to determine how to get the beef absolutely perfect, and you’ll need to roast the beef a day ahead so it is really cool before you slice it.

I WON'T LIE, MY FRENCH DIP IS ICONIC!

If you don’t want to roast your own eye of round, simply buy sliced rare roast beef. It could be a very fun project on a Sunday afternoon with friends if you do most of the prep in advance and invite guests to assemble their own when everyone arrives. In fact, I predict it will be one of the best meals they’ve ever had!

RUN DON'T WALK FOR THIS CLASSIC

What about Lucy’s Egg Salad (from my cookbook) on sliced brioche bread? Simple, delicious, and perfect for a no-cook dinner on a warm day or when you need to take a sandwich to go. This egg salad was one of my kids’ favorites. We kept it in the refrigerator on repeat, so it reminds me of children and a mother’s love. I recently discovered a gluten-free challah bread at Legit Bread, and it’s perfect for this sandwich. Even though this recipe is in the book, this story highlight shows you how to make it.

A LETTUCE WRAP MAKES FOR A LIGHT AND SATISFYING LUNCH

I couldn’t offer my favorite sandwiches without providing a Whole30 option, and I love this Whole30 Lettuce Wrap with Chicken. Honestly, you can put anything you want in it, but I love giardiniera, avocado, roasted chicken, a delicious sauce like Tessemae's Everything Bagel Ranch, and Marinated Red Onions. The trick is in the rolling. There are tutorials on YouTube to learn how, and once you’ve got it down, you’ll be making them forever.

THE SWEET AND SAVORY CARAMELIZED ONIONS ARE A PERFECT SURPRISE

Another favorite is our Grilled Cheese with Caramelized Onions, made even more delicious with the addition of our favorite sweet ingredient, California Prunes. It’s a special, unexpected twist that’s sweet and delicious. Absolutely everybody loves this sandwich.

THIS TUNA MELT WILL SURELY MELT IN YOUR MOUTH

Whether you’re having it on gluten-free or regular bread, my Tuna Melt is so yummy. The trick to the tuna is to use your hands to remove all the water before you flake it. There are so many wonderful ways to make this, but in my opinion the giardiniera makes it next level. Serve it with a delicious bread and talk to your cheese monger about what they would recommend pairing it with, though I always think a cheddar is lovely. Teri Tip: don’t add the greens and the pickles until the sandwich is out of the oven.

Lastly, below is a beautiful and delicious sandwich I recently had at Blackberry Mountain. I simply cannot stop thinking about it! I'm working on my own version of this stunning sandwich, and it’s coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled!
