“Anyone who thinks that they are too small to make a difference has never tried to fall asleep with a mosquito in the room.”

I LOVE MY MOM SO MUCH
It’s my mom’s birthday and the 21st time she hasn’t been here to celebrate. I celebrate her birthday anyway, to remember, herald, and celebrate who she was. I don’t dwell on the day she died, because out of all the days of her life, it was the least important. For me, her birthday is a happy day.

NOBODY COULD PUT ON A BETTER SHOW THAN THEM
I’ve been so lucky to have so many other women fill the gap for me these past 21 years. No one could truly be her, that’s for sure, but I’ve been fortunate to have people like my dear friend Susan Pertl, whom you’ve likely seen me cooking for in the background over the last couple years, and the band mothers. My mother’s dear friends have helped ease her absence in my life.

30 YEARS AGO AND TODAY: WITH MY DEAR FRIEND SUE PERTL
I enjoy following positive thinking Instagram accounts. I love stories of hope, and I love the examples of people making a difference. I appreciate the idea that we’re working hard to create positive realities not only for ourselves but for the world around us. When I see those stories, I am moved to tears every single time, and it feels good to have my heart touched so deeply. Some of the accounts I love are Upworthy, Good News Movement, Kindness Project OC, and Majically News.

I FOUND THIS VERY TOUCHING
The other day I read about a young hockey player whose father is gone, and how the other fathers tied his skates every week. It may not sound like a lot, but it opened me to the idea of filling in the gaps. In these crazy times, people need evidence of joy, evidence that people care.

IS THIS NOT THE HAPPIEST DOG YOU'VE EVER SEEN?
That is the essence of making a difference. It’s pretty incredible that we can follow these accounts, but even more amazing is taking the opportunity to notice where we’re needed and becoming one of the people filling a gap.

A NOTE FROM MY MOM
It’s different for each of us, based on who we are, what life experiences we’ve had, and what our superpowers are. For example, when people lose their mothers, they somehow find me. When they come to me, it’s so important to be there to bear witness and to let them know that it’s going to be okay, even though their life isn’t ever going to feel the same. Being there for them is a way I can make a significant difference and fill a gap.

CAN YOU TELL WE'RE RELATED?
How can each of us fill a gap? How can each of us truly make a difference in our own orbit? My hope is that, in reading this, you may take up my challenge and find a way to fill a gap. If we each did that, not only would those receiving want to pay it forward, others might also want to join in--and what a wonderful world it would be!

BACK TO SCHOOL AND WORK MEANS GETTING CREATIVE WITH LUNCHES
I happen to adore packing an amazing lunch, and I am crazy about the Icelandic Provisions Fruit and Nut Skyr. Whether it’s a lunch for kids or adults, the Fruit and Nut Skyr provides a perfect combination of protein and sweet, made even more delicious accompanied by pieces of manchego, fruit, salami, and gluten-free crackers. This lunch is truly a delight!

I WAS TOLD TO REST AND THIS IS HOW THEY FOUND ME... HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM
If you watch the Instagram Stories, you may know I’ve been under the weather for the last couple weeks. Right now my year of health means really looking at my patterns of overdoing it. When I say yes to others, it often means saying no to myself. I tend to run myself down, and getting sick this time has made me really take a look at this tendency.
