SCOTT GIVES THE BEST HAIRCUTS

I was getting my hair cut the other day and chatting with my friend Scott about life’s current challenges. Scott said, “We have to be taking inventory and reediting our life all the time.” I found this statement unbelievably profound, and it resonated with me, because it’s exactly what I’ve been doing: editing parts of my life. I’ve created a life filled with so much happening at once, and while I love it, sometimes it’s just too much.

GARDENING IS SO JOYFUL

Typically, I say yes to people’s requests, so I began there. I have begun saying no to what I don’t genuinely want to do, no to the ways I don’t want to spend my time. My mom would say that saying no to somebody else is saying yes to yourself, and I love that idea. Here’s something else my mother told me that it has taken me until 60 to truly understand: It’s okay to say no, and it’s absolutely okay to not give a reason.

ENJOYING MY MOMENTS WITH HENRY

My mom recommended simply saying a firm no because if you offer your reasons, often people will try to help you find a way to say yes. Finally, I understand the spirit of my mom’s advice, although I handle it a bit differently than she did.

LOVE SPENDING TIME WITH MY GUY

Here’s one example: On a daily basis, I receive direct messages about a company sending me a new product and wanting me to shout it out or add it to my stories. Or sometimes there’s a workshop, or somebody would like me to promote a platform. I don’t ever keep anyone hanging. I make a decision quickly, because a truthful no is much kinder than saying maybe to something you never intend to do or avoiding someone because you don’t want to disappoint them. These potential ventures would add to my already long to-do list, so I say no, thank them, and wish them well. If they ask me why, I simply say because I don’t want to.

TAKING TIME TO APPRECIATE THE SIMPLY BEAUTY OF NATURE

Don’t get me wrong. I love shouting out a small business, a brand, a book, or a product that I am authentically enthusiastic about. But I simply don’t have time to do everything everyone wants me to do. Actress Diahann Carroll said it well: “As I age, I find my time is very important to me, and I don’t want to be in the presence of something that I feel is a waste of time.”

MAKING LUNCH FOR FRIENDS

Here’s part of the joy of turning 60: Some of the BS, you just stop. Time is important, how we choose to spend it matters, and I know that I have more yesterdays than tomorrows. I plan to make the best of all the tomorrows I have left. Here’s what I want to do with them: Pet my dog. Spend weekends with my love. Enjoy my besties. Giggle. Sit by the fire. And do everything in the world to make my knee feel better.

I SURE DO LOVE HENRY

I’m certainly not an expert on living, and my ideas may not work for everyone.  But looking at all I do and consciously deciding which elements I want to continue, and which of them bring me joy, is actually bringing me joy. What if we each looked at our life with fresh eyes and edited, tried things a new way, and maybe even did things differently?
