Do It Yourself
"It takes half your life before you discover
life is a do-it-yourself project."

— NAPOLEAN HILL
FERNANDA MADE THIS ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS GLUTEN-FREE
CHOCOLATE CAKE FOR MY BIRTHDAY!
There’s never been a better time for a thoughtful handmade gift, and in my opinion, there’s no greater handmade gift than deliciousness in a jar. It’s a gift I love receiving and one I love giving. When I’m invited to someone's house (granted, it’s been a while), it’s a joy to bring jars of my meat sauce, chicken stock, or some tomato sauce for them to tuck away for a rainy day.
TEACHERS' GIFTS FROM 2015
Surely you know about my love for nurses, and I feel the same way about teachers, a group of unsung heroes who truly make a difference. Over the years I’ve loved giving my children’s teachers delicious food made with love and an array of beautiful spices from the Middle Eastern grocer.
HEALING CHICKEN SOUP. RECIPE REVEAL SOON.
My favorite gifts to bring someone who isn't feeling well or is having a hard time getting out of the house include soups like my minestrone, Italian wedding, and chicken noodle. My homemade granola also makes an exceptional gift.
A JAR OF DELICIOUS GRANOLA IS ALWAYS APPRECIATED
I also love to give an already prepped fruit crumble from my cookbook, along with the book itself.
JUST ASSEMBLE AND BAKE FOR A DELICIOUS FRUIT CRUMBLE
My favorite gifts to receive are those that come from the heart. Every year, Joanna gives me a day of organizing my closet and drawers. It’s a day we spend together--such a wonderful day!--and one of the most meaningful gifts. One of my love languages is acts of service!
GLUTEN-FREE COOKIE DOUGH BALLS
Tailor your gift to your recipient. If you have a friend who’s gluten-free, make a really wonderful gluten-free flour blend or, better yet, make a batch of gluten-free cookie dough, freeze it in scoops, and deliver it ready to bake.
The handwritten love letters I have received from my kids over the years are absolute treasures and better than anything store-bought. There were also years when they created coupons (hello, acts of service). In fact, Patrick, if you’re reading this, it’s not too late to clean your room.
WE HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THE GIFTS MONEY CAN'T BUY (COUPONS WERE ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT WHEN THEY CAME FROM PATRICK, WHO SURE GAVE ME A RUN FOR MY MONEY!)
But DIY isn't just about a craft or dish you can make for a friend. Without even leaving the house, you can make a difference on the other side of the world. Each year-end, I think about what I've done to make a difference and select some non-profits whose mission I feel personally aligned with. This year, one I've selected is the Shanta Foundation, a nonprofit that has been working in Myanmar for 15 years, and I hope you will too.
VILLAGE SNACK SHOP IN KAUNG HOTE VILLAGE
Recently, Anna Pool, my friend and a volunteer with Shanta for ten years, told me about Nang Aye Than, a mother of four, who started her village’s first snack shop and mini-store with a low-interest loan from the Women’s Saving Group. Prior to that, she could rarely afford protein like pork and eggs for her family’s meals. Now her family can afford the nutrition it needs, and she can send her children to school.
Let’s do it together! I will match each and every donation personally, and my hope is that you will consider making a donation, no matter how small. If you can give five dollars, or even two, that will be truly meaningful. Empowering women is so inspirational! Melinda Gates said it best: “If you want to lift up humanity, empower women. It is the most comprehensive, pervasive, high-leverage investment you can make in human beings.” DONATE HERE.
I asked a group of inspiring friends for their ideas on DIY gifts, including my friend Anna Pool, director of Shanta Foundation, a “criminally bad photoshopper,” a dear friend and social media manager, a blogger, a DIY duchess, and my own Roy. You’ll find their ideas below. I suspect you will love them as much as we did!
A DIY APPROACH TO ELIMINATING
EXTREME POVERTY IN MYANMAR
Most people don’t think about DIY as a way to do international development work. As a Shanta volunteer and board chairperson, I love that our approach to helping villages eliminate systemic poverty is 100% DIY. Shanta’s job is to help each village create a leadership team and provide coaching and training and some funding throughout our 6-year partnership. But they are the leaders and decision makers. They decide where to focus their efforts from a range of programs that provide new opportunities in women’s empowerment, education, income generation, clean water, health, and infrastructure. And when each village graduates from the partnership, the work goes on, long after Shanta leaves, because, well, they already know how to do it themselves! TYPEWRITTEN NOTES
ROY HAS A WAY WITH WORDS
Several years ago, I realized that my penmanship, which was never good, had gone totally to hell. But I have always enjoyed sending notes, particularly in packages. It occurred to me that what I needed was a typewriter. It would accommodate odd sizes of paper. And there is a personal element to it that a PC-generated note lacks. So, I found an old Royal typewriter on Craigslist. Later my brother took me to a thrift shop near him called “the Vinny.” It was there that I acquired this little beauty, a 1962 Aztec. It’s terrific for those short notes that I hope bring a smile to the recipient.

Here's a beautiful documentary about typewriters.

A GIFT FOR ALL SEASONS
Every year I make a calendar for my family featuring an especially goofy picture of one of us from the previous year, edited into different scenes. My Photoshop skills are on par with the average eight-year-old’s, but I can cut together 12 collages. It's more fun than a standard calendar, and it’s a gift that lasts the whole year. Bonus points: you can add everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries (your slacker little brother will thank you), and you can make it a tradition (you already have a jumpstart on your 2021 shopping)!

NO WORDS REQUIRED
Sometimes I like to say how I’m feeling without actually speaking. I think about the person I’m making a playlist for and add music they definitely like, because it’s always fun to hear a song you know. Then I add songs they probably haven’t heard, based on what I know they like. Making a playlist can tell a story through music. I even like to arrange songs by various artists to create a beginning, peak, and end, like a story arc. Playlists help me get to know someone while they get to know me.

GLUTEN-FREE PIE CRUST MIX
Five years ago this Paleo pie crust hit our blog as a tribute recipe to my late mom, DeVona and also as a way to DIY my way into enjoying pies again. Growing up our family always made an abundance of pies for Thanksgiving. Once we changed our lifestyle to accomodate Makenna's health needs, I was determined to keep the tradition alive for us, as well as help others enjoy the same. To see this beloved recipe in a mix today and available to a larger audience is heart warming and so incredibly unbelievable! My mom would be so proud!

THE FOUR LEAF CLOVER
I celebrate the idea of magic in every form, and this is one of the symbols that always feels so lucky to me. I especially love this because of my son, Patrick and St. Patrick's day and this symbol represents that to me. I'm delighted to share it with you! You can find it imprinted on some of the nocrumbsleft pottery.
