OFF TO A GREAT START
"Repeat after me: I'm about to walk into the greatest year of my life."

HAPPY FRIDAY!

Happy New Year! If December was all about delectable and indulgent, January is all about cleaning up our act and starting anew. The nocrumbsleft kitchen is committed to our January Whole30, and we’re on Day 5. After a period of indulgence, it’s nice to rein ourselves back in and enjoy a month of no booze, no sugar. I appreciate doing everything in moderation, but there is something about returning in January and immersing myself in Whole30 that I just love. Here are three dishes to make now if you too are reining things in.

THIS ROTISSERIE CHICKEN SOUP IS EVERYTHING

I made Rotisserie Chicken Soup on Day 1 of Whole30, because it’s luscious and delicious. The stock uses a rotisserie chicken. Roy first made this for me when I had a cold a couple years ago; he bought a rotisserie chicken, using the bones to make the stock. He sautéed carrots and added large pieces of the chicken. It feels almost like a noodle soup, with green beans and carrots. This soup is simply spectacular, and it’s something you will enjoy making again and again.

A SCRUMPTIOUS AND EASY DINNER YOU'LL MAKE AGAIN AND AGAIN

If you’re not doing Whole 30 and you to want to put together something easy for weeknight eating, this Weeknight Chicken Stir Fry is the best! Here it is done with a bit of rice pilaf, but if you’re on Whole30, substitute cauliflower rice.

THIS SALAD IS ALWAYS A KEY PART OF MY WHOLE30

This delicious Asian Chicken Salad was developed a while back in the nocrumbsleft kitchen, and it remains one of my favorites. I’ve had long phases in which I brought it to Michigan every weekend! As I’ve updated the recipe, I no longer use mango, just the Mandarin oranges. It has a most delectable combination of sweet, salty, and crispy. I like to make all the individual elements with the dressing on the side and assemble and toss as needed.

INSTEAD OF A COCKTAIL I OPT FOR MY FAVORITE SPINDRIFT

I truly enjoy getting back on track! When it’s time to buckle myself back in after indulging, I always love the words of my friend Liz Josefsberg. No matter what you’re doing to start the year fresh, here are some thoughts from Liz on how to start the New Year strong.

THIS IS DEFINITELY A BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

As you rotate back into your healthy habits, remember these five things:

  • Start small. Don’t swing to an unsustainably extreme diet. Instead, commit to simple, sustainable shifts, like changing to a more healthful breakfast for a week. Tackle lunch and dinner in the following weeks.
  • The simplest and most effective habit you can immediately establish is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
  • Create a health vision board to connect to why you want to live your healthiest life.
WE LOVE A VISION BOARD
  • I encourage outdoor walking daily to get your dose of Vitamin D. Even just 20 minutes is enough to boost mood and reduce stress.
  • Ask a friend to be your support and accountability partner. Text each other daily affirmations and share your wins.
VIVIAN AND I ARE ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNERS

I’m sending all of you my best wishes for 2022!  Thanks so much to those who took the journey with me last weekend, as Henry went from not feeling well to being on the verge of departing altogether. And thank you so much to modern medicine and our veterinary emergency room. We are on our final chapter with Henry, but it’s sweet to know that we still have some time with him, so we are loving and enjoying him day by day. I truly appreciate your sweet messages.

CELEBRATING EVERY DAY I GET TO SPEND WITH HENRY

In 2022, more than anything, let’s find a way to be nicer to each other and include somebody new. Create a dream wish for yourself and to try as much as possible to let go of 2021, so you start this year with as much hope as possible.

I was so delighted to have Katie Couric join me on the Table Talks podcast! As a lifelong fan, I absolutely loved her book Going There, and sitting down to talk with her one on one was such a treat. We talk about her dad, journalism, her approach to life, what we have in common, and so much more. You won’t want to miss this episode, and if you’re new to the podcast, you’ll also find three seasons of past episodes to choose from!

YOU WILL LOVE MY BOOK

We’re so delighted with all the new followers on our Instagram page, as well as all the new cookbook owners! If you’re doing Whole30 or simply eating clean in January, my Whole30-endorsed book is a must. It will get you through the month in a most delicious way. While you can often find it for a great price on Amazon, what’s even better is supporting an independent bookstore like Roscoe Books or Semicolon Chicago. If you’re not in a rush and you’d like a personalized copy, DM me and I’ll tell you which Chicago bookstore will make that happen.

FRED BOWLS ARE PERFECT FOR PORTION CONTROL

Oh my gosh, it’s Fred’s birthday, and we’re celebrating by spreading a little bit of Fred far and wide! This weekend, I’m offering a free Fred Bowl (while supplies last) with every purchase of $75 or more in the Shop! Like my dad, the bowls I named for him are sturdy and utilitarian—a superbly useful addition to any kitchen. They're great for mise en place, snacks, or smaller portions. Happy Birthday, Fred!
