Small Gatherings
"The fondest memories are made when gathered around the table."

I'M TOTALLY LOVING THIS TULSARA RUG FROM ROOM & BOARD. SO GORGEOUS!
My Thanksgiving this year is going to be different. As those of you who have followed along know, I usually have a large gathering of up to 40 people. We literally turn my whole living room into a giant Marie Antoinette table, and family gathers from near and far for a special day involving four grills in the backyard, platters of our traditional dishes, lovely bottles of wine, a special cocktail, and a beautiful afternoon that flows into the evening.
THANKSGIVINGS PAST LOOKED LIKE THIS
This year, Roy and I will be pretty much on our own at the cabin in Michigan. Our small Thanksgiving will be a nice day with a luscious feast and a lovely a walk in the forest. We see it as a chance to try a new, alternative menu of dishes we haven’t made before. I will still set a beautiful table with all the pomp and circumstance I have with the large group, but I also view it as an opportunity to look at the holiday with a fresh perspective. I have included a few friends in this week’s issue to help.
TURKEY TALK WITH ROY
Join me for Turkey Talk, this
Sunday, November 15 at 3:00 PM CST on Instagram Live!

Roy, our resident expert, will be sharing his infinite wisdom on how to cook a turkey to perfection. Grab a cocktail and a notepad and settle in to learn about all things turkey.  I can't wait to see you there on Sunday!
I LOVE ROY IN THIS ORANGE SWEATER!
Rather than our normal turkey confit, my Onion Soufflé, and my mom’s Corn Pudding (both gluten-free and regular), Roy and I are serving a capon with an oyster wild rice stuffing, mashed potatoes, something beautiful and green, a freestyle pecan pie, a wonderful gluten-free dessert not yet chosen, and a Spindrift Teri-tini cocktail.
CORN SOUFFLÉ
If you're planning a small Thanksgiving, that's one approach, but with the holiday looking and feeling different this year, it’s also a chance to do something even less traditional, like my Eggplant Parmesan, Chicken Piccata, or short ribs. Why not shake things up and try something different?
WHY NOT SKIP THE TURKEY AND DO EGGPLANT PARMESAN?
I will definitely miss my kids. With dear ones spread across the country and travel so challenging, this year offers an opportunity to embrace what is and find new ways to connect.
SET YOUR THANKSGIVING TABLE WITH YOUR FAVORITE TABLEWARE
I have always loved Thanksgiving and even have a Thanksgiving section in my cookbook, so it may not surprise you to know that I'm a Thanksgiving baby! You may remember that my mother didn’t enjoy cooking, and it is said that she was happier to spend all day in labor rather than in the kitchen. It completely goes in keeping with who I am as a person that the day that is all about celebrating a marvelous meal with family falls on the week when I was born. I love it!
THE NEW HURLEY PLATE (COMING SOON) IS FEATURED ON MY THANKSGIVING TABLE THIS YEAR
This issue would feel incomplete without recognizing that the history so many of us were taught about Thanksgiving doesn't accurately reflect the reality of what happened. Pausing to relearn, reflect, and understand that reality is essential. There is a heaviness and complexity that is entangled with the history of this holiday for indigenous people. To consider these important distinctions, CLICK HERE.
INCORPORATE NATURE INTO YOUR THANKSGIVING PLACE SETTINGS
This week’s contributors share their ideas for a virtual holiday cook-a-long, a sublime pumpkin dessert, a meal blessing, a vegan Thanksgiving, decorating with nature, and we even have a professional Spotify playlist curator who created a holiday playlist just for us.
JADE AND MOONDUST PIECES ALONG WITH A ROBYN'S EGG BLUE MOLLY PLATE
Here's a sneak peek of where I'm spending Thanksgiving. I've freshened things up a bit with my favorites from Room & Board. Pictured are two of my favorites, the black  Parks End Table and the big red Tulsara Rug.
SEASON 3  EPISODE 2
NOT STICKING TO FOOD
In this week's podcast, I talk with Michelle from @NomNomPaleo, and we go beyond food, discussing not accepting whatever is offered to you, your family as your best friends, reluctantly trying new things, figuring out how to be a foodie, and prioritizing rest. Join in, listen, and share with your friends.

PUMPKIN PUDDING
PUMPKIN POT DE CREME
Pumpkin Pot de Creme (French for “cup of pudding”) is the ultimate pumpkin pie without the crust. It begins by making butterscotch (caramel made with butter), and it just gets better from there, with cream, spices, and pumpkin puree. Pumpkins are in season for only a short time, so they hold a special place on my Thanksgiving table. And pumpkin is super healthful, so I can justify eating these beauties as breakfast too. I adore holidays that bring my grown kids home to sit around a table, eating together and visiting for hours. Maybe that's the most special thing about these Pots de Crème.

CREATING YOUR OWN SACRED BLESSING
Blessings are a doorway to your own magic. In them, you find your wisest voice and deepest authentic truth. Reflect on all you love. How does it feel to have these people, experiences, and things in your life? Gratitude is one of the most basic forms of blessing. A blessing is being present in the moment and expressing gratitude for what you discover. It’s taking stock of what’s working in your life without your effort, like our abundant Earth. It’s an opportunity to acknowledge all that’s in your life. Let your blessing come from the heart, but when in doubt, simply start with “thank you.”

MAGIC BEGINS WITH AFFIRMATION
"A KOREAN VEGAN THANKSGIVING"
Even before I went vegan, our family always had a nontraditional Thanksgiving, full of some of my favorite Korean dishes: japchae, savory pancakes, dumplings, braised potatoes. I loved filling my plate with all these Korean items, together with a buttermilk biscuit or some homemade dressing. When I went vegan, I veganized every dish, so my Thanksgiving plate today looks much the same as it used to.

MAKING MEANINGFUL PLAYLISTS
Sharing music is one of the best ways to show love for each other. I made this playlist knowing that when I gather with friends and family, I don't always want the music to take over the conversation. This playlist is great for chilling out with loved ones or as something nice to listen to casually while cooking. To make great playlists, prioritizing the vibe you want to cultivate in the space where it'll be played is more important than sticking to a single genre. This one includes music from across the board, and I hope you enjoy!
You can listen to the playlist here.

BRING THE OUTSIDE IN
As winter looms and the sun sets seemingly mid-afternoon, it can feel hard to get yourself outside into nature. Our tip? Bring the outside inside this season! Even if you live in the city, find branches in your neighborhood to make a perfect bouquet for that vase you’ve been meaning to fill. They brighten any space and create a natural yet elegant statement. A few colorful leaves make a great centerpiece or provide a pop of color on each place setting. Not a lot of leaves left? Use berries or seasonal flowers to add that finishing touch!

COOKING TOGETHER MILES APART
My best holiday memories are of my family cooking together, subtly adding salt or surreptitiously adjusting the heat on someone else’s dish. Cooking is a way we show love, and it offers continuity each holiday as the family grows and changes. This year my extended family can’t celebrate together, so I’m sending each household a piece of cookware and the ingredients for the holiday recipe they usually prepare. We’re going to do a virtual cook-a-long, which I’m sure will be chaotic, but a way to capture a bit of that magical feeling of bumping into and talking over each other in the kitchen!

My sweet boy, my pickiest eater, my toughest critic, and yet my biggest cheerleader when it comes to cooking. He loves No Crumbs Left dishes like Chicken Almondine, Cocoa Salmon, Heroine Chicken, and the oh so necessary Marinated Red Onions. It lights up my world when he asks for more from this awesome cookbook.
