How is it already another decade?

2020 is a big year for Spellbinder Books: we'll be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the store's opening, back in 1970.  And later in the year, November 1st marks the 20th anniversary of when I finalized my purchase of the store from the Miloviches.  Sometimes it feels like a long, long road, and sometimes it seems as though it was just yesterday.

Either way, it's rare for an independent bookstore, or any business for that matter, to be around long enough to celebrate a 50th.  Our doing so, in large part, is due to the wonderful community of the Eastern Sierra, including all the towns here on the East Side, and all the folks who visit us regularly from other parts of the country and even world.  The other big part?  The amazing humans known as 'booksellers' that I've had the privilege of working with over the years.

We'll be marking this special year with special parties, events, contests and offers that we'll be announcing via e-newsletter and facebook, and we hope you can celebrate with us!

As we take this quieter time of year to recover, review and reassess, I like to take a look back at the previous year.  Here are some observations ...
Bishop is reading!

As usual, our most popular books in-store range from local guides and history to national bestsellers.  A special congratulations to our local authors is due!  Here are 2019's Top Ten bestselling* titles:

2. Tales Along El Camino Sierra Vol. 1, by Dave and Gayle Woodruff
3. Overstory, by Richard Powers
4. (tie) Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, and The Tattooist of Auschwitz, by Heather Morris
5. There, There, by Tommy Orange
6. (tie) Keeper of Lost Things, by Ruth Hogan, and 50 Classic Day Hikes of the Eastern Sierra, by Devon Fredericksen and Reed
7. (tie) Sierra Wildflowers, A Hikers Guide, by John Muir Laws, and Becoming, by Michelle Obama

9. Casting around the Eastern Sierra, by Mike McKenna
10. Working Dogs of the Eastern Sierra, by Jennifer Crittenden.

*not included are titles that were large, one-time bulk purchases for schools, non-profits, or other organizations.
By partnering with the community, we were able to make a difference in 2019.  Some of our events and projects were:

1. Children's Book Week with Altrusa of the Eastern Sierra - 300 books provided to children in the Eastern Sierra at cost or less.
2. Wish Tree program with IMACA - $700-worth of books provided to participating children in the community, at no charge.
3. ICARE Benefit Shopping Day - over $2,000.00 raised for the Stitch Fund, to aid shelter pets in need of medical care.
4. Supporting young people's literacy and other charitable causes throughout the year through working with various programs, such as Community Reads and TuniwaNobi, local book groups, and other organizations.  Last year, we provided close to $20,000 in donations and discounts to the community!

Just by shopping at Spellbinder, you enable us to continue assisting with these programs.  Would you like to do more?  We welcome donations of gently used books to support the Wish Tree program - books are sold, and in lieu of giving you store credit, we donate the profits so that books can be purchased for participating children each year.
