Welcome to this second Newsletter of the EU FP7 project "EREAN", which stands for the European Rare Earth Magnet Recycling Network. This newsletter informs you about breakthrough results, publications, project, events, policy related news etc. in the domain of NdFeB magnet recycling. Registration now open for the Summer School on Design/Recycling of Permanent Magnet Motors for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (HEVs)
The aim of this Summer School (24-26 August 2016), organised by EREAN's twin project "DEMETER" and by EU H2020 REMAGHIC, is to bring 50-60 PhD students and postdocs together to learn and discuss about the “Design and Recycling of Rare-Earth Permanent Magnet Motors and Generators in Hybrid and Full Electric Vehicles. The Summer School consists of 12 lectures (60 min lecture + 30 min of Q&A), which will all be of great interest for the EREAN public. Registration is now open.

EREAN (European Rare Earth Magnet Recycling Network) is the FP7 Marie-Curie Initial Training Network Project which trains 15 young researchers in the science and technology of rare earths, with emphasis on the recycling of NdFeB permanent magnets. Research challenges include the development of efficient extraction of rare-earth-containing materials from electronic waste scrap, removal of exogens by pyro and hydrometallurgical methods to produce a concentrate of rare earths, new separation methods, direct electrochemical reduction of rare-earth oxides into metals, and the preparation of new magnets. EU H2020 Advanced ERC Grant SOLCRIMET
Prof. Koen Binnemans (KU Leuven, Coordinator EREAN) recently obtained an Advanced ERC Grant. SOLCRIMET’s aim is to successfully apply a novel approach in metallurgy - solvometallurgy - to the extraction of specific critical metals, i.e. rare earths, tantalum, niobium, cobalt, indium, gallium, germanium and antimony. The approach involves the discovery of non-aqueous solvent pairs that are immiscible and allow the extraction of metal complexes at moderate temperatures, leading to high-purity recycled metals.

Where EREAN meets ERECON
The most recent EREAN Policy Brief reflected on the final report of the European Rare Earths Competency Network (ERECON) “Strengthening of the European Rare Earths Supply Chain – Challenges and policy options”. A summary of ERECON’s recycling recommendations is provided and linked with the on-going work on NdFeB magnet recycling in EREAN. New challenges and opportunities are discussed. These will also form the basis for the upcoming Policy Workshop in Brussels on rare earths in the circular economy.
