NOVEMBER FEATURED VIDEOGRAPHER - KATY DANCA GALLI

Katy grew up in Florida and was lucky to have been able to attend Scamp in the Florida Keys on a grade school trip. It was then that she was destined to fall in love with the ocean.

Katy's work has been featured on Baresports.com, Scuba Diving Magazine, Sport Diver Magazine, and Dive Photo Guide. She has accumulated contest honors with the Ocean Conservancy, Our World Underwater, and won Cover of the Year Charlie Award for 2012.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Seasons are changing and our winter diving prospects are upon us.  Yet with colder waters come more abundant photo opportunities with larger pelagic species like sharks and inland encounters with manatees.  This winter season, our Board of Directors are planning a few dives you won’t want to miss.  A schedule will be made available soon.  Speaking of schedules, we are down to the final weeks prior to our annual SFUPS Holiday party.

Please register soon for this wonderful event.  In addition to a year in review along with a glimpse into the road ahead, we crown our annual SFUPS Photographer of the Year.  Tallying the results of all monthly photo contests for 2016 we are pleased to see how competitive the race for first place has become as we round out the year with our final contest on November 8.  Hopefully everyone entered?

This November 8 general meeting will officially be my last serving as your President for the foreseen future.  In addition, it will also be Phil Rudin’s last session having served on the Board since 1992.  As we move on to encourage new leaders to steer the ship, we would like to affirm our continued commitment to the organization.  Phil and I are not going anywhere as we believe we can best be advocates and voices of experience to future leaders from behind the scenes as needed.  We will also be in attendance as I host my final Holiday party event in December.

Our November meeting will initiate with the tradition of communicating who the proposed Board members will be for 2017 and offer an opportunity for the member base to vote these leaders into office commencing January 1, 2017.  We highly encourage our members to come to the meeting to share in their support of our outgoing and new Board leadership in addition to listening to the excellent presentation by Michelle Winkel on Wakatobi.  See you on Tuesday night!

NOVEMBER GUEST SPEAKER - MICHELLE WINKEL

"WAKATOBI DIVE RESORT"
Sunset at Wakotobi Dive Resort
Michelle Winkel, Wakotobi Resort Experience Representative, will take us on a photo tour of Wakatobi Dive Resort. She will share highlights of the premier dive sites and discuss group trip opportunities.

Located on a small island in southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, Wakatobi Dive Resort is home to the world's highest level of marine biodiversity. The resort offers five-star service and casually-elegant accommodations in a collection of Bungalows and Villas situated on a white-sand beach overlooking the expansive House Reef. This site has been named as one of the world's best shore dives, and it provides divers and snorkelers with easy and unlimited access to a diverse range of underwater environments and marine life. A fleet of large 70-foot dive boats carries small groups of divers to more than 40 additional sites located within a private marine preserve. Some begin as steep walls that rise to within a few feet of the surface. Others take in dramatic seamounts or unique coral formations. A majority of sites are ideally suited for extended multi-level profiles, allowing divers to enjoy bottom times of more than 70 minutes.

Join us at the November 8th meeting to learn more about beautiful Wakatobi Resort, and the world class diving it has to offer!

Join Force-E (Pompano Beach Location) on Nov 17, 2016 at 6:30 pm, for a presentation and screening of Changing Seas episode Beneath the Bridge. Changing Seas is a public television series produced by WPBT2 – South Florida PBS in Miami, Florida.

The Blue Heron Bridge, is known as one of the best shore dives in the United States. What appears as an unlikely dive site at first is home to a rich variety of marine life. A scientist from Florida Atlantic University is studying the two species of octopus that live here, to better understand how these animals can co-exist in one area without competing with each other. In addition, several underwater photographers are contributing to scientific knowledge by documenting the large number of nudibranchs, or sea slugs, that live beneath the bridge.

Join us for some popcorn and refreshments and watch the amazing critters of the Blue Heron Bridge. Click here to register.

IKELITE GAMMA II FLASHLIGHT
By Phil Rudin

The Gamma II is precision-machined from aircraft grade aluminum with a military-grade anodized finish. It has a non-slip contoured body that is 142 mm in length and only 36 mm in diameter (5.6 X 1.4 in). The flashlight weights in at a mere 113 g (4 oz) and is powered by two included CR 123 batteries, which provide over ten hours of burn time.

Once assembled the Gamma II is depth rated to 120 m (400ft) and has a color temperature of 6500K. The on/ off switch is recessed in the bottom of the tail piece to help prevent accidental activation.

The Gamma II ships with an O-ring, wrist lanyard with slip locking device, a 2cc silicone lubricant tube and a set of two CR 123 batteries. The Gamma II is available in Black, Silver, Purple, Red and Pink with a US retail price of around $130.00. A two pack of CR 123 replacement batteries can be found for US $4.00.

How you decide to mount the Gamma II will depend on your personal needs. You can use it with a lanyard, or Ikelite has several mounting kits for a variety of lighting configurations.

A top mounting kit can be used with a single ball mounting clamp on the top of the housing as a narrow beam focusing light and flashlight, the light can be integrated into just about any ball arm system using a triple clamp or single clamp.

The Gamma II is small and lightweight; it packs neatly into your luggage or can be carried in your pocket. It is an excellent light for your boat, home or car and an excellent multi-purpose dive light. I like to keep one handy for a number of different uses. I like the narrow beam angle as a focus light for macro and as a secondary light while diving. A single set of batteries will get you through most dive vacations but I always carry spares just in case.
