DECEMBER FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER - SAM HODGE

Sam was born in Belize, and that is where his love for the ocean began. It's also where his passion for photography eventually grew into an outlet for creativity as he enjoyed the unique lighting scenes in the tropical jungles.

He moved to California in the late 80's and purchased a pair of 35mm SLR's for topside photography. This is when he took a more sincere interest in surf photography. Unfortunately, he flooded one of his SLR's in an attempt to build his own housing!  He hung up his fins for awhile due to moving to Northern California as well as having had an early morning encounter with a shark in the murky waters of Santa Cruz. In 2001, he migrated to a digital SLR and never looked back.

Sam has a darling daughter whom we have come to know over the years. She is an accomplished soccer player, and Dad loves to be involved and take photographs, capturing all those special moments in her life.

Sam shares his pursuit of achieving excellence in underwater photography with other SFUPS members. He has served as President of the Club for the past four years and has helped guide the way for many extraordinary accomplishments.  This year, he decided to step down from the President's role and pass the baton to Suzan Meldonian.

Sam, thank you for your years of service. We wish you well and look forward to your continued participation with the club.  (Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of this post to see the adorable shot he took of his daughter, Zara!)

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

A HUGE Congratulations to Kelly Casey who was honored on December 4 as the 2016 SFUPS Photographer of the Year.  Kelly’s submissions in the past year prominently placed high in the monthly categories aided by the votes of her peers to earn her this coveted recognition out of 378 submissions for the 11-month competition cycle this year.  She was joined by 1st Runner-up, Wayne MacWilliams and 2nd Runner-up, Walt Stearns.

Our December holiday party also marked the last meeting that I would serve as the organization’s elected President.  It was an honor reminiscing with 63 others on recent years’ accomplishments and sharing with our more recent members the evolution of our organization.  Serving as your President and on the Board of Directors for five to six years has given me the opportunity to meet some great photographers and most importantly develop life-long relationships with many of you.  I will always view these years in a positive light.

So… "what happens next in 2017?”  During the November meeting the membership voted in a new Board of Directors to be led by President-elect, Suzan Meldonian.  In my annual oratory at each holiday party I enjoy imparting a glimpse into the future club efforts for the upcoming year.  This year, I intentionally left my presentation for 2017 and beyond blank, because the future of this organization is what you want it to be.  There is no doubt that Suzan Meldonian and her leadership team will have wonderful plans to share with you in the new year but ultimately, our members have steered this ship the direction forward.  Through your requests, advice, engagement, and overall participation I am confident this organization will thrive at least another 35 years.  You will see me in the audience time and again as an avid supporter, listener, and student of underwater photography.  It is with profound respect that I offer in my parting words to the South Florida Underwater Photography Society my best wishes towards a relentless pursuit of excellence in underwater photography.

2016 SFUPS HOLIDAY PARTY REVIEW

As always, the SFUPS Holiday Party was a great time shared with great friends and great food.

Everyone enjoyed seeing the Year in Review, a compilation of all our accomplishments during the course of the year. Sam spent a little time sharing the tremendous progress of the club over the past four years, and he officially passed the baton to Suzan Meldonian for 2017. We have much to be proud of.  We also thanked Sam for his service by presenting him with a commemorative award.

Finally, we are fortunate to have excellent sponsors who treated us very well by donating an excellent assortment of items for the raffle!  Thank you to all our sponsors!  We appreciate your support!

GLOWDIVE LIGHT DOME
By Phil Rudin

Light diffusing devices have been around about as long as photographers have been exposing images and underwater photographers have been using diffusers for many years as well.

Recently, dome shaped strobe diffusers like the Light Dome have begun to gain traction in the underwater photo community replacing the much more common flat diffusers which have been used for decades.

We know that hard lighting creates hard shadows and high contrast. Soft lighting tends to wrap around the subject and fill in harsh shadows creating a lower contrast within the images. The rule of thumb for all light diffusers is that bigger is better, so the larger the surface area of the device, the softer the light. The Glowdive Light Dome has a large surface area as compared to standard flat diffusers. The shape of the Light Dome, the much larger total surface area and the materials used in constructing them, all combine to produce extremely soft edge lighting. The result is a much less noticeable transition from strobe to ambient lighting in an image.

Another upside to the Light Dome is that you are able to get closer to your subject even in turbid conditions with less backscatter. They work well for wide angle photography, macro photography, and are ideal for those using single strobe lighting.  Softer lighting allows you get closer to the main subject without blowing out highlights, while reducing backscatter even in murky water.

The Light Dome is specifically designed to fit a wide variety of popular strobes including Epoque 230, Ikelite 125, 160, 161, Inon S-2000, D-2000, z-240, Sea & Sea D1, D2, YS01, YS02, 110, 110a, YS250 pro and are custom made for a variety of video lights.

The Light Dome can be purchased through the glowdive.com web page for around $90 USD for one, or $169 USD for a pair, plus shipping. Alex Tattersall, from Underwater Visions, the UK Glowdive Light Dome dealer provided the domes for the purpose of this review. He can be reached at uwvisions.com.
