PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

First and foremost, with Hurricane Matthew set to impact Florida, I trust all of you have been taking the necessary precautions to stay safe in the coming days. Regrettably, most life threatening incidents occur within days after the storm with downed powerlines, fallen trees, and other dangers.  We are all hoping for as little damage as possible, both to our homes and neighborhoods, but also to our beautiful ocean environment.

I would also like to take this opportunity to advise our members that per our organization bylaws we will communicate in the October general meeting next week the open 2017 Board positions along with those members seeking to fill the roles.  In our November general meeting, you will elect our new Board to commence in January 2017.  Perhaps the largest change you will hear will be the announcement of my retirement as President of the organization.  After a solid 4 years I have decided to pass the baton of leadership to others.  Indeed I remain committed to the organization for years to come but feel it is time to elect new leaders with bolder ideas to shape the organization’s future.

On a more positive note, I'm happy to announce we will have an excellent speaker for October’s general meeting - Craig Dietrich, local award winning photographer. His enthusiasm for the ocean is unparalleled, and his deep respect for the creatures he photographs is to be admired.  Craig will share some of his finest work, knowledge, and expertise of wide angle photography.

Once again, my best wishes to you, family, and friends as Hurricane Matthew comes ashore.  STAY SAFE and see you on Tuesday.

OCTOBER GUEST SPEAKER - CRAIG DIETRICH

"GO WIDE!"
"Take a Bite"   Great White Shark
Craig Dietrich is an award winning underwater photographer based in Jupiter, Florida. The first time he picked up a camera, he knew he had found the perfect outlet for his creativity, and sparked what would become a life altering passion for photography.  Craig served in the Navy as a photographer during both Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and learned to dive after the Navy.

Craig's stunning underwater photography has won multiple awards and been sold in upscale galleries from Carmel, California to Fort Lauderdale.  You can see more of Craig's work and see his event schedule by visiting his website at DietrichUnderwater.

Join us at the October 11th meeting to gain insight and learn more about wide angle photography from Craig. A few of the topics that he will cover will be camera set-up, lens choice, strobe placement, settings, and interaction with wide angle subjects. Don't miss it!

SFUPS MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

Susan Meldonian was published on September 26, in National Geographic's, Your Shot Daily Dozen. Her photograph featured a larval Tripodfish, Bathypterois granulator, which was taken during a blackwater dive.  This fish is a deep-sea fish, known mostly from photographs taken from submersibles. The fish rises up from depths of 2,400 feet to 15,000 feet during a vertical migration occurring in the ocean.

Sarosh Jacob, this month's Featured Photographer, had two of his films selected to be screened at the San Diego Undersea Film Exhibition.  He also has a monthly article and video feature with Sport Diver Magazine.

Several SFUPS members were represented in Mission Blue's Publication. The article, Florida's Marine Ecosystems, The Story of the Costal Southeast Florida Hope Spot, is an area of reefs extending from Key Biscayne up to the St. Lucie Inlet.  You can learn more about the Hope Spot and those who contributed to conservation efforts by visiting the Shark Team One Website or Facebook Page.
