D.P. Smyth Cup - Saturday 14th August

After 18 months, competitive Junior Rugby action finally returned to Templeville Road on Saturday 14th August 2021 for the 2021 edition of the D.P. Smyth Cup.
The "D.P. Smyth" trophy was presented over twenty years ago by the family of Dermot Smyth to the Club to be used as a J5 Cup, with the first competition being played in the year 2000. Dermot was a past pupil of St. Mary's College and was captain of their first ever JCT win in 1934. He went on to captain the Rugby Club (1939 - 41) during which he won 2 caps for Leinster (1940). He was elected President of the Rugby Club (1960 - 63), as well as President of the Leinster Branch. He was also an Irish Selector and served on many committees over the years. Dermot's two sons, son in law and four grandsons have all played for St. Mary's College in recent years
Entrants on the day included our own St. Mary's College RFC team, Clontarf, Tallaght and Terenure, who despite the wet weather, were all eager to get back to playing after the long Covid break.
Those that were up on the day were able to see some very good encounters, as well as getting to see some “live” rugby. In the cup final, Terenure won out with a very late try after a very tight game throughout.
Results roundup:
R1: St. Mary’s 7-5 Tallaght; Clontarf 5-14 Terenure;

R2: St. Mary’s 19-5 Clontarf; Tallaght 0-7 Terenure;

R3: St. Mary’s 5-14 Terenure;
R3/Shield Final: Tallaght 10-14 Clontarf;

Cup: St. Mary’s 0-7 Terenure;
Many thanks to all clubs for taking part on the day and well done to Shield Winners Clontarf and Cup Winners Terenure.
We were delighted that the Smyth family were represented on the day by Dermot’s grandson Colin and great grandson Tim, who is the fourth generation Smyth to wear blue. The club was represented by Junior Vice President Paudge McGill and Honorary Secretary Aoife O’Donnell.
Many thanks to Hayley Whyte - Leinster Branch Referee Coordinator and referees Cian Ormond, Arthur Dupont and Rhys Doyle for their help.
As always, many thanks to Marie Hammond for helping with the organising of the day, and of course to Mossy Davin who organises the competition every year - we'd be lost without you Mossy!
We look forward to the pre-season Cup competitions for Junior Rugby beginning over the next couple of weeks.
The 2022 edition of the competition will be eagerly looked forward to as well!

'Give It a Try'

St. Mary's College RFC are proud to have brought the Canterbury 'Give It A Try' program to Templeville Road from Wednesday the 28th of July from 6pm to 7pm - it is now running every Wednesday for 8 weeks.

This is a fantastic opportunity for any girls interested in trying rugby in a safe and fun environment. The course is designed to introduce girls to the sport of rugby through non-contact games and skills development. It is 8 weeks of fun in the sun (hopefully!).

For further information please email Sarah Brennan Fallon at or sign up for the course “Canterbury GIAT” through the link below:
