Spire announced Spire AirSafe, a service to track, prevent and reduce response time to airline disasters ahead of a November 2018 international mandate for most international flights to provide updated flight information every 15 minutes.

The mandate was set in response to several airline disasters, including Malaysia Airlines flight 370 and Air France flight 477, where improved tracking would have led to a recovery effort measured in days rather than months or possibly the prevention of the incident all together. Spire expects to have 25 satellites carrying airplane tracking payloads launched by the end of 2017, with 50 more to follow in 2018.

Spire deployed four satellites in November and launched another four satellites in December. Spire has successfully launched a total of seven launches with 25 satellites aboard five different vehicles.
