Beyond the Classroom:
A Testimony from TES Student Mike Kotecki
Pastoral ministry is a high calling from the Lord. In fact, it is the highest calling that any person could ever receive. The reason why it is such a high calling is because every pastor is an under-shepherd of the Chief Shepherd, Jesus Christ. The church is not ours, but His! And thus, if anyone is going to lead the church of Jesus Christ as a pastor, then it is vital that he is trained to be the most capable and skilled pastor that he can become. This is where TES is exceptional in training up future pastors who will serve those whom the Lord has chosen to redeem, and it is exceptional in three ways: a discipleship culture, strategic instruction, and an ideal training environment.

Discipleship Culture

One of the best ways to learn to do something well is to learn by example. Shepherds are to be training shepherds, and this is one area where TES excels. The pastors who lead and teach the church are also the same men who lead and teach the students. As these pastors humbly strive to follow Christ, they teach the students to do the same. They invest their time and energy in applying their knowledge of the Scriptures to their heart! This is wisdom personified, and it is vital that every pastor who leads Christ’s church has the humility and character that is produced by the Spirit. The education received at TES is not only intellectual, but is aimed at applying the Scriptures to the heart of each student so that humility is the end result.

Strategic Instruction

An under-shepherd of Jesus Christ is instructed by our Lord to be “a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Tim 2:15). This is a command that is not to be taken lightly because the pastor who preaches from the pulpit is a herald of Jesus Christ Himself. And thus, it is vital that each pastor becomes an accurate handler of the word of truth. TES is committed to training each student to become a faithful exegete of the Word of God, and the curriculum is designed to achieve this goal. Knowing that I am now able to unfold the divinely-intended meaning of the Word of God gives me great confidence that I am delivering the message that God wanted to give to His people!

Ideal Training Environment

The pastor is called to lead a local church. On the surface, this may seem self-evident. However, many pastors today are trained in an environment that is detached from the local church. It is difficult to learn how to lead a church when you are not taught by those who lead a church. Here is another area where TES excels. The seminary is not detached from the church, but it is an integrated whole. The benefit of this for the student cannot be overstated. Each student is now completely immersed in the culture of the church, which allows him to interact with the body of Christ and be sharpened as a shepherd. In such an environment, the teaching that is received in the classroom moves from the theoretical to the practical. I have learned so much from being a part of the local church while in seminary that I could never have learned had I been trained in an environment where the church and the institution were separate entities.

The experience that I have had at TES is difficult to put into words. It has prepared me for ministry in ways that I never would have expected. I am so grateful for the faithfulness of the men who teach me how to understand God’s Word and who shepherd my soul at the same time. For anyone who is considering entering into pastoral ministry, TES is the ideal place to learn how to become a faithful shepherd of the church of Jesus Christ.
