WALKAROUND: SAT FEB 18 at 2 PM
  • A "walkaround" is meant to vet a certain location for suitability as a team staging area or storage for a supplies cache. On the way there, team members should check in with each other on FRS radio walkie talkies. As you approach the spot, take out your radio, press down, wait a second, then say your name and a brief message like "This is Katy, at Fremont and MLK, does anyone copy?". Then wait for a response. Do this continually until you reach the location, and respond to other's calls. This is how we can test our radio's range near each location.
    Eliot Radio Channel: 7
  • We'll be doing this walkaround right after the Boise/Eliot/King tree planting with the Executive Director, Scott.
Where: Friends of Trees, 3117 NE ML King Jr Blvd
When: Sat Feb 18 at 2 PM

Overlook Sustainability Summit: Putting Preparedness Into Action - Sat Feb 25 10a-2p
Overlook's 3rd annual summit, and 2nd focused on preparedness.  Featuring Steve Eberlein from American Red Cross from 10-11:30. This is an important community building event for Overlook and Portland, so, whether you're just hearing about Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquakes or you've been in NET for years, we hope you can make it.  More details + registration are here:

RED CROSS VOLUNTEER EVENT: SAT FEB 25 at 9 AM
Signup http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4cafa923a7fc1-redcross

After further clarification from the Red Cross, this event will not be tied to Boise and Eliot. It will be all over town. Also, they do these events once a month. The Boise and Eliot event was postponed to October. Therefore, I am not going to attend this event, but will in October.  - Katy

Want to get NET trained? It's FREE!

PBEM is scheduling a Basic NET class for late April/early May (classroom sessions will be spread over 04/29, 05/06, and 05/13). This class will have around 400 - 500 seats in it, and the location will be in inner NE Portland (in the Lloyd District). The waitlist for NET classes is VERY long. If you are interested, email me at pdxboiseprepares@gmail.com and I'll make sure you get on the list for the class.
Team Project Updates
  • Jan 31 meeting notes are posted here.
  • 2017 meeting dates are in our Facebook group and on the NET Meeting Google calendar.
  • Team Cache donations
    • Katrina, Flo and Katy will be posting on Nextdoor in late February to ask for donations to our team cache. This is also an outreach and education opportunity: Each person donating will get a half sheet flier telling them about this team!
    • We can do this call for donations about twice a year. We can fundraise for any remaining items, using the nonprofit Friends of Portland as fiscal sponsor. In parallel, we need to work on getting a spot for team caches in each neighborhood, which goes along with getting access to staging areas at schools, parks, or private land.
Boise Eliot Humboldt Emergency Team, by count:

  • NET Assistant Radio Operators: none
  • NET Assistant Team Leads: none
NET Roles Needed: Ideally 2 each in Eliot, Boise, and Humboldt. Contact Katy at pdxboiseprepares@gmail.com if you're ready to take on a role!
  • Assistant Team Leads - NET trained, ready to take an ICS leadership role like Incident Commander, Operations Chief, Logistics Chief, Rescue Chief and/or offer help to the Team Lead in an administrative capacity such as outreach that can result in new staging area/team cache location agreements and scheduling radio drills, NET refresher trainings and exercises, and other events.
  • Amateur Radio Operators - HAM trained folks, who can be the connection between our NET and nearby Fire Stations and the City ECC when a major disaster disrupts normal communications.
