St. Francis Xavier Church – Mt. Washington, KYON THE WAY….
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world, you will have trouble, trials and tribulation.  But take heart: I have overcome the world.” -  John 16.33
We are learners, seeking to learn to walk in God’s Way, seeking to serve God’s agenda.  We are on the Way, but as we witnessed once again these past few days, the Way is filled with violence and hatred and evil and suffering.  With you, my mind and heart and soul have struggled with these murders of church-goers, black elders, teachers and innocent children.  Mainly I am struggling with a central question - what does this mean for me?  But also, as I near the time of my arrival with you, I ask, ‘what does this mean for us?’   What does this mean for the Church, the Body of Christ?   I only know that Jesus tells us that we will be involved in the trials, and trouble and tribulation.  We cannot stand aside and hope it won’t happen here, among us.
Throughout the years, I’ve been stunned by the ways in which God’s grace permeates the Body of Christ in a particular setting, but I’ve also been stunned by the lack of understanding of what it means to follow Christ by those same Body’s of Christ.   Far too often, we are bound up by the same things that have a stranglehold on the culture around us.  We do not trust God, nor seek God’s agenda.  Rather, we defend and hold fast to our own agendas, to our own idolatry, to our own ego and fear.  We conform and are not transformed into God’s new creation.
But thankfully, the Holy Spirit, in this season of Pentecost and in each season, breaks in and breathes life and hope into our midst.   We are not left alone, God is near, walking often beside us, guiding our way and calling us to faithfulness.  “Do not be afraid, for I have overcome the world” says Jesus to his disciples and as we listen, I pray you will hear those same words spoken to you and to us.  Take heart.  Love has overcome.
I thank you for the opportunity to serve Mineral Point UCC and to join in mutual ministry with you.

Grace and peace,
Pastor Sue
