UMD Homecoming - October 21

Put UMD's Homecoming on your calendar to join with brother alumni, actives and UMD dignitaries.  The Alumni Association will be hosting a tailgating party before the football game.  Food and beverages will be provided with a donation.

Further details will be sent as festivities are finalized.

Besides the tailgating and football, UMD has many other activities going during Homecoming week that you can enjoy:

News

The Alumni Association through its Board of Directors has been working with the Active Chapter to strengthen their membership and operations.  In addition to providing scholarships to individual members through UMD, we have extended financial help to the organization and offer a mentoring program to assist their educational skills and a marketing plan for recruiting quality members..

Our communications have been substantially improved compared to previous years. The Alumni Association has a website (alphaalumniassociation.com) that provides information to our members and allows dues to be paid online.  We have also worked with the Active Chapter to develop their own website (alphanuomega-umd.com) that they can use to help in identification and recruiting efforts.  This site is independent from the previous site through UMD that was frozen in 2010. .  We also have our own newsletter communication to provide timely updates to activities and organization issues.

Our continuing problem is that we have email addresses for only half our membership and a 55% response rate for those we have. If you know of brothers not receiving our communications, please forward this newsletter using the link at the very bottom or send information to:
info@alphaalumniassociation.com.

The organization needs your donation to continue our work.  Please consider a generous tax deductible donation to our dues and donations fund.

Support the UMD Women's Cross Country and Track Team

For the last two years members of the Alumni Association have provided financial scholarship support to the UMD Women's Cross Country and Track Team.  We have raised from $1000 - $1500 each year. The team and its coach Joanna Warmington have been very grateful for our continued assistance.

We again ask for your support for a program that has been very successful (e.g. national 1500 m champion Emi Trost) despite being underfunded in comparison with UMD's competition.  Please consider a tax deductible donation that will be given in total with others in honor of the Alpha Nu Omega Alumni Association by clicking on the following donation form:

,  Alpha Nu Omega Scholarship

Providing scholarships to worthy individuals in the Active Chapter is still the primary mission of the Alumni Association.  Last spring John L. Banks scholarships in the amount of $5000 each were awarded to Isaac Winter and Andreas Aristidou.

There was discussion to clarify the timing of qualification of new members for scholarships.  Our Charter still refers to the quarter system at UMD while the curriculum has now changed to a semester basis.  To qualify for an Alpha scholarship an Active must have at least one semester of enrollment at UMD, not as an initiated member of the Fraternity.  Therefore, a freshman who has completed one semester and has pledged and been initiated before the spring scholarship selection process begins is eligible to apply for the Banks and Knodt scholarships, but not the Orrick which requires multiple years of membership.

Again, your donation is needed to increase funding for our scholarships considering the escalating tuition costs.

Norwegian Invasion

It has been reported that an old Alpha and former Berserker from Norway invaded Duluth this past July.

Halvard Berg ('67) came to visit Alumni president Mike Dean who in turn hosted a party in his honor with many of his former brothers from the 60s.  Halvard lives in the Oslo area with his wife Jorunn.  He spent his career in the shipping industry living all over the world.  While he has now retired, he still teaches part time.  Here are are a few photos of Halvard (blue shirt) and the party in Duluth.

A Day at the Races
A Night of Celebration

Jason Golde again hosted a day at the Canterbury race track on July 3rd.  We assume all who attended won copious amounts of money followed by the enjoyment of great fireworks that probably scared the crap out of the horses.

Frozen Four
This was not an Alpha event, but because it was held in Chicago your Secretary had the opportunity to go to the games and sit with relatives and friends from MN who came to root for the UMD Hockey team and its captain Dominic Toninato, my cousin's son (who has just signed a professional contract with the Colorado Avalanche)..  We had a great time except for losing a close championship game.

Alpha Active Chapter News

The Active Chapter continues to have quality members with good academic standing.  They participate in many campus activities and are anticipating getting involved with leadership and mentoring programs.

They are still challenged with low numbers and impending graduation, so they are focusing on recruitment this fall.. They report that rush is going well, and they have several people who are interested in joining Alpha Nu. They have meetings in the coming weeks for those who were not able to attend formal and informal, functions. They also are setting up brotherhood and other rush events for prospective members. They are looking forward to Homecoming to share the day with alumni,
