The last few weeks have been filled with the Advanced Mountaineering Class and a Wilderness First Aid recertification but I did manage to sneak in a few trips including these two 3rd class outings to the desert and southern sierra.

This just about catches me up on recent trips which is a good thing considering I'm leaving tonight for the first outings of my summer trip season.  So here's to an adventurous 19 or 20 weeks :)

Spanish Needle: Bane of the Southern Sierra

Spanish Needle is a 3rd class peak located just north of Walker Pass not far from Ridgecrest.  It's notorious for its route finding difficulties and over the past few years there have been a number of Sierra Club groups that ran into issues trying to make the summit.  So Mat Keliher and I decided it was the perfect way to spend a post AMP class Sunday!

Dyadic Point & Spectre 3rd Class Peaks In Joshua Tree

Dyadic is another challenging 3rd class peak but it's located to the east of Joshua Tree / 29 Palms.  The rough terrain and mileage involved makes it a whole different sort of challenge compared to Spanish Needle.  I climbed it in January as a long dayhike and went back this time as a two day backpack to evaluate someone's Sierra Club M Provisional.
