Grower Champagne direct from the Vigneron
Hello <<First Name>>, time to relax and let me propose some interesting 6 bottle champagne discovery packs for your enjoyment.

Etude Chardonnay
Six different blanc de blancs. A vintage and a non vintage Voirin-Jumel will allow you to compare the qualitative differences that we can expect of the two different blending methodologies. The two Lilberts will allow you to discover how 'pressure' can effect the style. The Coquillette is unique in the champagne region since they do not use reserve wines, resulting in a precise focused style. The Bourgeois-Diaz is classic oak matured biodynamic with real vivacity and energy.

Champagne Voirin-Jumel Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru NV.
Based on 2014 with 20% reserve wines, from Cramant, Chouilly, Avize and Oger. Dosage 6g/litre. The chardonnay terroir speaks, chiseled and steely, with citrus and minerals, hints of white fruits and floral. Very precise and elegant as always and excellent value. The creaminess of the Cramant component sets the tone for a fine and elegant champagne. The Avize component adds some subtle spice.

Champagne Voirin-Jumel Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2010.
The 2010 vintage is a real success for the top growers in the Cote des Blancs - and Patrick Voirin has really delivered a precise mineral champagne. I see some similarities with 2008 at this property. Hugely mineral with real purity and great elegance. Dosage is 4g/litre and the malolactic fermentation is blocked. Fermented and aged in stainless steel tank. Purer and finer than the 2009 vintage wine. Recently received 93 points in Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

Champagne Lilbert Blanc de Blancs Brut NV
From Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry fruit. Blend of 50% 2014, 35% 2012 and 15%  reserve wines. Dosage 6g/l. Lovely acidity and elegance. Creamy purity with
elegant perfume. One of the best ever standard Bruts from Bertrand.  Taut and steely with precise structure and minerals -  with great length.

Champagne Lilbert Blanc de Blancs Perle NV
65% 2013, 35% reserve wines 2009-10-11. Dosage 5g/l. From a rigorous old vine selection. Perle is the demi-mousse lower pressure
cuvee. Regular champagnes are bottled at 6 atmospheres of pressure, and we see lower pressure versions at 4 atmospheres. The lower pressure delivers a more elegant, purer mouth-feel. The finesse and minerality is enhanced with the consumer being none the wiser. Lemon/citrus/chalk in spades with smoky overtones.

Champagne Stéphane Coquillette Cuvée Diane Blanc de Blancs NV
100% chardonnay from Chouilly, from vines planted in 1964. Dosage 5g/l. This is a beautifully structured elegant pure chardonnay - complexity from old vines - lovely acidity with a precise dosage. Hints of floral and tropical overtones. Based on 100% 2014 with no reserve wines. Can be enjoyed now or cellared. Great length on the palate.  Almost a vintage wine. Real purity and precision.

Champagne Bourgeois-Diaz Cuvée B NV
A single-grape variety and single parcel cuvée. This wine is the expression of a single vineyard of 100% chardonnay called “Le Temple” with an exceptional south easterly exposure and a soil from the middle Bartonien composed of calcareous marls. Harvest is 100% from 2014, 20% from oak barrels. Dosage 0 g/l. This biodynamic vineyard in Nanteuil-sur-Marne is the most westerly vineyard along the Marne. Subtle purity and minerality with hints of star fruit, citrus and spice. Huge length and amazing complexity. Energy in spades in a brut nature.

Etude Terroir
Two different blanc blancs from growers both in Cramant. The Voirin-Jumel has some Avize component adding some spice. The two blanc de noirs allow you to compare subtle red fruit strawberry purity of Mareuil-sur-Ay with the spicier robustness of Ay. And the Ledru / Bourgeois-Diaz comparison allows you to not only compare terroirs 100km apart, but also the effect of meunier in a blend, and the effect of biodynamic viticulture.

Champagne Voirin-Jumel Blanc de Noirs 1er Cru NV
Based on the 2014 vintage with 20% reserve wines, dosage at 7gm/litre is perfect. From a single 1.48 hectare pinot noir vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Ay – Les Carelles. Mareuil-sur-Ay is Billecart Salmon territory, and here the pinot is always delicate and subtle, hints of strawberry and red fruits, perfume and spice. The novice champagne drinker may recoil at the notion of drinking a 100% pinot noir champagne, but this wine reveals the purity and elegance of the terroir and competent wine making

Champagne Stéphane Coquillette Cuvée Les Clés Blanc de Noirs NV
Grand Cru from Aÿ, yes 100% pinot noir. Mostly from vines planted in 1960.  Dosage 5 g/l. The  red fruits are subtle, and we get some classic funkiness I associate with Aÿ pinot. 100% 2014 with no reserve wines. Ridiculously delicious Grand Cru pinot from old vines Aÿ. A gastronomic champagne.

Champagne Bourgeois-Diaz Cuvée 3C NV
A blend of three grape varieties: 55 % meunier, 17 % chardonnay and 28 % pinot noir, with 35 % vinified in oak barrels. 60 % from 2014 and 40% from 2013 harvest, all biodynamic. Dosage: 2 g/l. This may be the entry level wine in the range but its complexity and subtle oak integration leaves me speechless. Minerality with smoky fruit meunier all juxtaposed yet in perfect harmony. We get hints of rose petal, orange peel, grapefruit, pomegranate and  brioche all on the long palate. Crisp and fresh with vivacity, energy and length.

Champagne Marie-Noëlle Ledru Brut Grand Cru NV
Based on the 2013 vintage with reserve wines, this Brut reveals the quality of Ambonnay and the purity of Marie-Noëlle's wine making style. Dosage at 5gm/litre is perfect, so this is really an Extra-Brut. 85% pinot and 15% chardonnay. The power and elegance of Ambonnay pinot noir is on display, and the chardonnay from Bouzy adds some funky spice. Ultra fine mousse with creamy sherbet overtones and piercing nervosity. Hints of apple and hazelnut all bound in a smoky texture. Marie-Noelle has officially retired, making her last remaining cuvees rare and highly sought after.

Etude Prestige
Two powerfull yet elegant blanc de blancs allow a non vintage versus vintage comparison. Superstar biodynamic champagnes from Eric Rodez and Jerome Bourgeois allow great terroir comparison, including a classic maceration pink from Jerome. And to finish a wood matured zero dosage vintage pinot noir from Coquillette.

Champagne Eric Rodez Crayeres NV
40% chardonnay, 60% pinot noir. Average vine age - 30 years. Blend of 2012 - 32% and many reserve wines. Tank for 42%, barrels 58%. Partial malolactic fermentation. Dosage 5 gr. This may only be the 'entry level' wine from Eric, but it is the flagship of his achievements. Crisp and subtle, the red fruit pinot is in perfect balance with the crisp mineral Chardonnay. The partial blocking of the malolactic fermentation adds cleansing acidity. Pure and precise with the oak adding some lovely smoky overtones. The light dosage of only 5gr/litre leaves the palate refreshed and cleansed.

Champagne Bourgeois-Diaz Cuvée 3C Collection NV
A blend of three grape varieties from only one harvest : 28 % meunier, 37 % chardonnay and 35 % pinot noir, 100 % vinified in oak barrels 100 % from 2012 harvest, all biodynamic. Dosage 2 g/l. This 'super 3C' is blended from a stricter selection of base wines with a higher proportion of chardonnay with longer lees aging and all oak vinified. Hugely complex with the oak perfectly integrated.   The higher proportion of chardonnay adds a lovely level of minerals and citrus. On the palate we see floral, rose petal overtones with a dash of smoke and lime zest. Again we see biodynamic energy.

Champagne Bourgeois-Diaz Cuvée RS NV
A macerated rosé wine, 100 % meunier all from harvest 2013, 75 % stainless steel tank, 25 % in oak. Dosage 0 g/l. Meunier from 2 biodynamic vineyards in Crouttes-sur-Marne, one planted in 1960 and the other one in 1930 on silty clay over limestone. Smoky elegance, long and subtle. Red fruits and spice, a powerful maceration pink. Lovely with duck or pork.

Champagne Stéphane Coquillette Cuvée By Louis Vintage 2010 Brut Zero
100% pinot noir from a blend of best parcels of Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Zero dosage. This is the tete de cuvée extra-ordinaire. Subtle floral and citrus aromas lead to a vinous, mineral palate with hints of almonds, red fruits and brioche. Hugely complex and palate staining. The zero dosage is totally transparent. and the subtle wood integration enhances the saline minerality.  This Champagne behaves like a wine and needs time in the glass to open up and expand. Certainly a candidate for opening a few hours in advance and having time to breath - like all fine wine. All the components are in perfect balance. Fermented in tank and aged in oak for 9 months. This cuvée is named after the son - Louis.

Books

A newly released mammoth book is Gert Crum's - 'Champagne - The Future Uncorked'. This book contains newly revised and updated maps of all the important vineyard lieux-dits and in depth profiles on many of the top houses and growers. Gert is an accomplished prolific author. Only just released and still difficult to obtain - Amazon UK have it for about 80UK pounds - so with freight to Australia it is close to $200 - but I have a number of copies available for $150.

Michael Edwards in the 'The Word of Fine Wine Issue 58' wrote a great review on this new book. Read it here.

And of course we have Adelaide's Kaaren Palmer's definitive text book on all things Champagne with much emphasis on 'style and tasting'. 'Champagne - A tasting journey', Winner of the Best in the World Gourmand French Wine book award 2016. You can read great reviews of her book at her new website here. I have some copies in stock at $140.

… an encyclopaedic book loaded with information and defying categorisation. It’s an engrossing and comprehensive book, which took years to research and write. The quality of the production is high, and it’s a beautiful book to regard.Perhaps a hardback rather than soft would have been justified (but no doubt the price would be even higher). I recommend it.
