Strawberry season already started in Egypt, Spain and Morocco. It is now time to debrief and share, as every trimester, our market views and expectations.
The January cold wave's consequences were stronger than expected. On one hand fresh export market for grower lasted longer. And on the other hand frozen strawberry process started with a delay of almost a month. Despite this weather condition, prices are relatively stable. However impact on quantity if any, is not known precisely at the moment.
Some processors started to freeze strawberries already. Others won't start before 2 weeks from now. At the moment, price of raw material is still high. However, price expectation for 2017 are stable versus last year. As usual at this stage brix are still a bit low.
Polish strawberry stocks are almost gone. There will be no carry-over this season. The weather conditions of the next couple of months will be critical and shape the potential of the new crop.
Since last summer, raspberry market prices went down regularly till the beginning of this year. As per today prices seem to have reached a stability. The high stock level of Poland and Serbia combined with a lower demand (buyers rushed on fruits in season due to difficult 2015 crop) is not helping. So far, several manufacturers are considering not to sell expecting future better prices. The next 3 months weather will tell if they are right. Moreover, some farmers are announcing not to pick up their fields if price remains low during next coming crop.

A wild blueberry production over 250Mlbs seems to be the new normal figure for the last 5 years. A new record high production last summer definitely triggered the end of a golden age for blueberry farmers in America. If no major climatic event occurs before new crop, we believe that market price will remain bottom low in 2017.
It is now clear that the forthcoming crop will see many small farmers disappear which will consequently lower the offer. On the other hand, we expect a rise in demand due to low prices offered.
But whatever happen, we foresee a couple of difficult years for growers and manufacturers before market corrects itself.
