Operating Partner #200

Happy Thursday <<First Name>>

Welcome to the 200th OP Letter! I feel like it was only yesterday that letter #1 went out in 2017. For those unfamiliar with the OP newsletter, it is the evolution of my now-defunct blog which was live from the mid-2000s until 2016. I write about a variety of topics that are interesting and important to me which hopefully inspire you as well.

The OP has been valuable to me in a variety of ways.

  • I can test out new hypotheses or theses which is a process I originally learned from Fred Wilson. When I write something that you disagree with, I hear about it! This is tremendously helpful to me to refine my thinking.

  • Helping people find new careers or jobs. I’ve heard from countless folks who learned about a career or job from the OP and were successful in the hiring process. I love that this letter helps inspire people into new careers or find new roles at a variety of companies.

  • Building new relationships. I have met several current business partners through the content of the OP. It’s been amazing to meet new companies who are tackling issues that I raise in this letter. I cannot meet with everyone immediately, but eventually, I do. Do reach out.

When I look back at the 199 issues of the OP, the most engaged issues are around predictions and talent/hiring/jobs. As an audience, you all seem to love this content.

I am working on my 2022+ predictions but for this issue, we will focus on talent and hiring opportunities. It is the beginning of the year and many of you may be thinking of a new start. I went through and curated jobs across the existing portfolio companies at Bain Capital, my portfolio of angel investments, and companies that exist in the market with no affiliation other than me liking them… and included some below.

With with all of that said, lets start with some fun links to get us going... (just like we have in the past 199 OPs).

And here is a great quote from my pal Kevin Marshall who I’ve known for over a decade and is no stranger to the New York startup and venture community.

It's easy to find reasons why something won't work.

But it's way more challenging, and I would argue interesting, finding a way that it will.

Doing the latter (with a revenue model you can prove through action) is what entrepreneurship is all about.

I love the quote and it sets a great tone for the OP overall.

Thank you all for subscribing to the OP!  I appreciate each and every one of you and the attention you give each week.

Curated Job Opportunities

In most Operating Partner letters, I include job opportunities that I find across the Internet and from my portfolio companies at work (Bain Capital). Sometimes, the OP community sends me jobs to post here as well. If you know of someone amazing who should apply to one of these jobs, please feel free to forward this OP to them.

All of the jobs are operating jobs. If you are looking for a career in Venture Capital, my friend John Gannon writes a great newsletter that outlines various jobs at/in Venture Capital funds. You can sign up here to receive his newsletter that has these jobs.

If you are looking for a new job at  an earlier stage company such as a Series A, B, C company backed by Bain Capital Ventures, check out the open roles across their portfolio here.
