Busy, busy...

May is here, and we're in full training and racing and planning and celebrating mode.

This month sees us getting ready for the Edinburgh Marathon Festival (and EFR social, of course), a wee jaunt to Berlin, and future plans to hold our own racing event! The May newsletter also celebrates brilliant milestones and features a wonderful biography of a stalwart EFR member.

Happy reading and happy running!
                                                                                                            -  Your EFR Committee

the one, the only, Gill Quille

I joined EFR two years ago when looking for a way to get fitter after retirement. I used to run a bit when I was much younger but wasn't really capable of even running between lampposts.

I started in the Learn to Run group and it was amazing in so many ways: amazing not to be judged for my size, my age,my speed (or lack of it), my kit, my shoes; amazing to be accepted without question, not to feel the need to explain myself in any particular way. Amazing to meet and make friends with so many diverse, interesting, amusing and friendly people. Amazing that after really very few weeks I could run 5k (albeit very slowly).

I then trained as a jog leader and have enjoyed supporting and encouraging new and returning runners and seeing them achieve more than they thought possible.

I have now run Parkrun a few times and a couple of races and come in last. It just means guaranteed loud cheering and a justified consolation glass of wine.

When ill or injured I walk instead. I'm just about to get involved with the EFR book group-reading is one of my other hobbies along with knitting and singing.

I have learned a lot about running and about life from joining EFR and enjoy it so much. Thank you.

LEARN TO RUN 2017: graduation = Park Run!

Our LtR programme Winter/Spring 2017 finished the last Saturday in April. To celebrate how far our graduates have come, we are planning an en-masse excursion to the Portobello ParkRun on Saturday 06 May! It would be great to get as many graduates to Parkrun there as well as every other EFR runner who'd like to take part. The run kicks off at 9.30am which means you won't have to miss out on brunch!

Important: to run in any ParkRun, you need to register on-line first and get your unique barcode to bring along with you. You only have to register once and it's free of charge. After you've registered you can use you barcode at ANY ParkRun anywhere, just remember to bring it! If you don't bring your barcode, you won't get a time.

Parkrun is a free timed 5k run. The Portobello race is three laps around the lovely paved footpaths of Figgate Park. Car sharing would be ideal - let Kate know if you can offer lifts or would like a lift. This ParkRun is also accessible by bus. The run kicks off at 9.30am which means you won't have to miss out on brunch!

Plans are in the works to organise our OWN 5k race!!! The details so far:
  • Saturday 17 June
  • 10 am
  • The Meadows
The Committee will be needing a host of volunteers to help make this event a success. Their first request is suggestions for a slightly fancier name. ;)

If you're wondering how you can help, please talk to Al asap.
