Christmas, Christmas-time is here...

I'm feeling a little nervous here. Up until now, Siobhan has been our newsletter-writer-extraordinaire and I'm a bit worried whether this one will measure up or not. On the other hand, I put on a dress and wear high-heels at least once a year, so what do I care?

'Running' and 'Christmas' go together like 'Rupaul' and 'Eleganza'. What better way to EARN all those sumptuous sweets (forget about burning them off - that's what January is for) or excuse yourself from awkward family conversations* (*insert awkward family conversation here). It's also about the excitement you feel when receiving that piece of running kit you've been coveting all season, hearing the crunch of frost under your shoes on a sparkling silent winter day, and clinking champagne flutes with friends at an annual bash.

So don't let the cold weather keep you in. Christmas-time is one of the best times of the year to get out there and run.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

Time to jingle your bells and tip-toe to the mistletoe: EFR's most 'festive' social event is happening this month!

HUGE kudos to SocialSec Jude for securing our favourite brunching establishment, DiGiorgio's, as our Christmas bash venue. With meaty, veggie and vegan plates on offer from £25-30, plus a BYO liquor option (corkage fee: £5 wine, £3 beer) everyone can look forward to a satisfying feast. Full menu details can be found on the EFR Facebook wall.

Jude has 40 places to allocate and the deadline for getting your £10 deposit to her was 01 Dec. But don't worry if you missed it! Contact Jude asap and maybe she'll be able to squeeze you in if you ask her nicely. Afterall, it's Christmas.

When: Saturday 17 December 2016
Where: DiGiorgio's, 1 Brandon Terrace  EH3 5EA
Time: 7:30pm
Optional Attire: *festive flair fabulousness*

2017 INTERNATIONAL CLUB RACE

(*intercom crackle*) "We're sorry to announce that the 2017 EFR International Club Race has been delayed. Please listen for further announcements."

After taking a closer look at our first proposed ICR location (Budapest), the Committee have decided to select a different race-event that is more accessible from Edinburgh. This will hopefully make it easier for a greater number of EFR members to come along and participate.

A Facebook poll with the details of 3-4 new locations will be posted early in December for people to vote on. The result will be revealed at our Christmas party on the 17th.

NEW COMMITTEE BIOS

The 2016 AGM saw an unprecedented 'passing-of-the-torch' moment for the EFR Committee, with long-standing fixtures graciously stepping down and bright new stars stepping up. So .... just who are these new visionaries anyway?

President: Al Hopkins
As President my main job is chatting, welcoming, and generally being around; other duties include representing the club to other organisations, which is basically more of the same. I’ve been with EFR over 3 years now (by pure fluke I managed to join the club’s inaugural run), and I’ve turned up to pretty much every run I’ve been available for since - I’ve never seen so much Saturday morning daylight! I trained as a JogLeader in November 2014 and joined the Committee as Vice-President at the 2015 AGM. When I joined the club, I’d been running on my own for about 2 years, and out for about 6 months, so an LGBT running club seems to have been a pretty good next step.

I love EFR for so many reasons: the running, the socialising, the Pride marches, the rest of the Frontrunners network, and all the properly lovely members! I’ve never felt more more comfortable with who I am as a person, and the club has a lot of responsibility for that. I love welcoming new members and watching the club grow - we’re now nudging a cool 100 members, which feels both natural and insane, considering there were only three of us on that first run with me holding the others back! :)

Running is my favourite sport, followed by swimming - and I’m now signed up to a SwimRun race in June which is way beyond my current abilities... so my primary goal will be survival,  followed by completion, remaining uninjured, and dignity, in that order ;)

Favourite brand of shoes? Asics for road, Innov8 for trail and fell. Innov8 also for swimming, obviously. All must have at least one shoe with rainbow laces :)

Vice President: Hannah Cornish
Although I’ve been a runner for a while, I’m quite new to EFR and club running in general. At first I was attracted by the convenient training times and locations, but when I realised it was also LGBT friendly and populated with some truly awesome humans, I was sold! I love how open, welcoming, and inclusive the club is. As someone who has always run because it makes me feel good, I appreciate the fact that the club is primarily focused on ensuring its members enjoy their running, rather than times, distances, and leader-boards.

It sounds daft, but my favourite kind of runs are those that take you places - not just runs off the beaten track that lead somewhere you’ve never been before, but runs over familiar ground that you share with people who take you to a new place in your own mind. The conversations and laughs you find yourself having with other EFR runners at training sessions or races, or over brunch or beers at socials, make all the aching muscles worth it! I’m really looking forward to getting to know everyone better, and figuring out my new role as vice-President in the year ahead. I’m also really excited about the prospect of more away trips to races in other parts of the UK (and abroad - more on that in this [the next?] newsletter!), and getting my shoes properly muddy with you all this winter.
Treasurer: Paul Barton
Paul is the treasurer. You might not see him running as he's had a tendon injury come and go for about 18 months and tries to run while injured trusting in physio exercises. His friends tell him he should simply just give his injury a rest and it should get better but he never listens. If you ask him nicely on a walk he might bore you with his tale of injury too.

- Preferred activity: Running and hiking if I am allowed two! If I must choose and e.g. could never do one of these again, it would have to be hiking at the top of the list.
- How long have you been with EFR? 3 years
- Favourite brand of shoes: Asics
- Favourite menu choice for brunch: Portobello mushroom in a roll
- Most memorable moment with EFR: Dancing in The Street after Pride with EFR vest on
- What motivates you? Want to find out how fast I can go

Secretary: Lucy Redmayne
Hi I’m Lucy (on the left) the new EFR secretary, I’ve got some seriously big boots to fill since we lost Lucas to Dundee! I’ve been running with EFR since March 2015. I started on the Learn to Run programme and ran my first 10K in September. I’m not much of a runner, but I love the friendly, sociable and inclusive atmosphere of EFR – it’s the people and the brunches that keep me coming!

Events Secretary: Kate Foggo
If you told me two years ago I would a) start running, b) kind of like it and c) then start helping other people learn to run I would have laughed at you, a lot. Now I’m found on the slow 6K, doggedly counting the kms til brunch/dinner! I’m working my way through the brunch menu, and the race distances. Having now done a 10K race, I’m contemplating my first half marathon some time in 2017, providing my shins can hang in there…

Communications Officer: Jerry Davin
I arrived in Edinburgh just over two and a half years ago. I joined Frontrunners during 2016 and have found the group to be really welcoming and supportive. During that time I have completed the learn to run programme, managed to run 6k a few times a week, enjoyed some good conversations and food and dodged a giant chandelier. As well as meeting, new people the club has also given me the opportunity to get explore the city and build up a resilience to Scottish winters (and summers).  Lucas and I are co-communications officers. We will be looking after the newsletter, the website and the twitter page.

The Shy Ones...
There's always a few non-conformists in a club, including EFR. We laugh in the face of danger, think rules are meant for breaking, and if our owners have the gall to take us to 'good manners class', you're fuckin' right we're gonna bite the teacher (twice).

Following in the footsteps of our spiritual leader, the *original* bra-burner herself, Guru Siobhan Hill, you will find us giving our all to this club even if we don't always play by the rules.

Social Secretary: Jude Hallewell

TRAINING

Our Learn To Run sessions continue to be in high demand and, like everything, the more times we do it the better it gets! January 2017 will see further improvements on our previous programme to respond to the feedback we've received. Our jog leaders will be looking to combine the best parts of JogScotland's programme with other successful "Couch to 5k" programmes to design a new-and-improved LtR session that should be our best ever.

Equally popular are our
Interval Training Sessions, which will continue to happen on a monthly basis. These are excellent work-outs that can help runners get to the 'next level'. Whether you're looking to get faster, conquer your next big distance goal with gusto, or simply wanting to add a little variety to your routine, these sessions are a blast and are open to everyone. Speak to Seamus or Jamie Kelly for more info.

PLACES + FACES

From the wilds of the Pentland Hills to historic Jedburgh where we had one of our biggest race-turnouts ever, EFR has been keeping busy this Autumn.
