President’s Message sounds so pretentious. How about Salutations from Sandy? 😊
Our first in-person speaker meeting since Covid was delightful. Donnee Harris gave a wonderful presentation on “How Not to Bore Your Readers.” Here are some of my favorite highlights:
- Keep Adding Complications to Characters’ Arcs.
- This is something I need to work on, and it was good to be reminded that without complications. My stories are in fact boring.
- Create Internal and External Conflict for Characters.
- External is easier for me, but internal is more difficult because I never want anyone to “hurt.” This is another area for me to work on.
- Keep Your Readers Curious.
- Cliff hangers! Why would my reader want to turn the page? Make it so…
Donnee also talked about main plots and sub plots, like a box of puzzle pieces that need to be fit together in one cohesive conclusion. I had to laugh when she talked about all of her colored pens and pencils “laying all around the house.” Especially when Marcus was actively nodding at that comment.
We were also pleased to have bonified royalty in our presence. Prince Godwill D. Fomusoh was having breakfast at Hodel’s with Portia Choi’s husband, Tim, and knowing he was an author, they invited him to the meeting. What a delightful man. Nothing pretentious about him, just another writer, and hopefully a new friend of Writers of Kern. His book, “Surviving the Sahara” is available on Amazon. Amazon.com: Prince Godwill Fomusoh
This month we look forward to hearing from Alex Segura. Check out his website: About | Alex Segura
