São Paulo is one of the most influential cities around the globe. It’s the main financial district in South America, and one of the most cosmopolitan cities with a vibrant lifestyle. The city now has a new mayor, or as we like to say “is under new management.” João Doria Junior, a successful businessmen, is now the new face of politics in Sao Paulo.

João has plans to recharge the city by improving public health and education, and making São Paulo more efficient. In his first day as a mayor, Doria started a significant movement to clean-up, revitalize, and beautify São Paulo. Dressed as an environmental agent, Doria led the cleanup effort, which included critical parts of the city and downtown area.

According to João, his administration plans to look at the city as a company, distancing itself from politics and generating new opportunities for improvement, whether it is in health, education, housing, transportation, public safety, employment or entrepreneurship.

The people of Sao Paulo are expecting good results from their new business-savvy leader.

There isn’t a hotel general manager in the world who does not want to increase revenue, innovate ahead of the market, maximize the efficiency of their operation and optimize customer service.
Let’s not forget the small matter of presenting owners and investors with an ROI that would not only exceed their expectations, but equally would compare favorably with other real estate asset classes, such as educational, residential, retail and commercial spaces.

Despite the advances in technology, I am a traditionalist at heart and I believe the word hospitality gives us the greatest clue as to how hotels should be operated – hospitably. That means creating customer loyalty through superior guest service, not online marketplaces.
Here are my top five reasons why:
  1. It costs five times more to win a new customer than it does to keep an existing guest.
  2. It is more cost-effective to market to existing customers than new ones.
  3. The most important time to acquire customer loyalty is during their first visit.
  4. An existing customer is up to 50% more likely to spend money with you compared with the probability of selling to a competitor’s guest.
  5. If you could increase customer loyalty by just 5%, it would increase the average profit per customer by at least 25%.
Remember, customer loyalty can be negatively affected as the result of poor customer acquisition decisions, for example through daily deal websites that may bring new customers today, but won’t repeat the business tomorrow. The trick is to create a balance between customers to whom you can provide value, and those who represent value to you.
