The Monterey County Rail Extension project will extend passenger rail service from Santa Clara County to the City of Salinas. The project will improve commuter access between Salinas, Gilroy, San Jose, and San Francisco. It will provide an alternative to traffic congestion, thereby reducing commuter stress and increasing productivity. The extension will provide access to jobs, healthcare, education and shopping, and expand transportation options for the young, elderly and disabled. Service will begin with two daily round-trips. The project will provide state-of-the-art transportation and transit infrastructure and act as a catalyst for future economic growth.

The first phase of the project, known as the Kick Start Project, is divided into three packages as follows.

  • Package 1: Salinas station improvements: Lincoln Avenue extension, parking and circulation.
  • Package 2: Salinas train layover facility and track improvements.
  • Package 3: Gilroy station and track improvements.

Bowen Engineering and Environmental has completed structure demolition at the Salinas train station in preparation for Package 1.

Here's what is coming up next: the City of Salinas is scheduled to begin utility relocation along Lincoln Avenue/W. Market Street this spring. This is expected to be complete by the end of June.

Demolition of the former Credit Union, located at 20 W. Market Street.
