President's Message

Jun Mao, MDNatural products in integrative research. Patient-centered care systems. Meeting patient and family needs. We have seen growth and innovation in each of these areas. Our keynote speakers for the 2017 international conference will share their experience and insight in these evolving elements in practice. Mark your calendar to join us November 12-14 in Chicago, Illinois, for the international conference and read more about our speakers below. Not only do we benefit by the multi-disciplinary attendance and conversations at our conference, we also gain through the interactive and participatory nature of our programming. This includes our popular presentation of abstracts. Our call for abstracts is open through May 10; consider making a submission and tell your colleagues about this opportunity. See the call for abstracts piece in this issue for procedures.
Last month, we introduced our new special interest group initiatives, beginning with pediatric and gynecology groups. Please contact if you are interested in joining one of these or if you believe we should consider forming a group in another area. This initiative is open to SIO members.
Not yet a member? The conference (available at a special member rate) and SIGs are just two of the excellent reasons to become part of our organization. Read more about membership.
As always, I welcome your thoughts for the further development of SIO and our mission to advance evidence-based, comprehensive, integrative health care to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.
Jun J. Mao, MD, MSCE

Herb of the Month: Astragalus

AstragulusWe chose astragalus, an herb widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, for this issue of the NewsWire because of its popularity as an immunostimulant. A perennial flowering plant prevalent in northern China, Mongolia and Korea, astragalus is valued for its medicinal effects. The root is often combined with other herbs to boost the immune system, to improve endurance, for preventing upper respiratory infections and colds, to lower blood pressure, to treat heart disease and diabetes, and as an adjunctive therapy for cancer. Read more about astragalus.

The Herb of the Month column is provided, with SIO's thanks, by the Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, which has developed and maintains a free web site, “About Herbs.”
