President's Letter

By Dave Coppock

The Rimrunners recently lost one or our charter members who was instrumental in getting the club started as well as the Montana Women’s Run. Dick Lachenmaier passed away a couple weeks ago after battling cancer for several years. Dick and his wife Patricia (Pat) were active Rimrunners in the fall of 1981 and as best as I can recall, hosted our first club race, The 1981 Turkey Run, from their home in Lockwood.

Dick’s wife, Pat, was one of the better female runners in the area and consistently won the female category as well as her age group in those early days. Pat had mentioned to Dick that it would be great if there were a separate all-women’s run, since most of the road races back then were dominated by men and generally accounted for three quarters of the field. Pat felt kind of lost in the crowd, Dick suggested an all-women’s run to the club and in 1982, the Montana Women’s Run was born. Read More

Rims to River 8K

Thank you to everyone who ran in the first race of our Free 3 series: Rims to River 8K! Runners had the option to run on their own or run together with the group on Wednesday, June 2. For those that chose to post times, here are the Rims to Rivers results. Thanks for participating and we hope to see you at the next two Free 3 races this summer!

Rim Runners at Heart & Sole

It was a beautiful summer morning for the RRCA National Championship 5K Race: the Heart & Sole Run. Rim Runners formed a team. This year the race started in waves, so we had different start times, but many found each other at Dehler Park afterward to chat and enjoy the event.

June Trail Cleanup

Thank you Rim Runners for cleaning up the trash along our adopted trail: it looks great! It was in much better shape this time and we were able to pick up trash along the entire stretch from 29th to 24th in about an hour. While we didn't find nearly as much cash as we did during the April cleanup, Vince still found $1.

Blast from the Past:
Dani Aragon and the Olympic Trials

by Brad Coutant

In June and July 2008 the Aragon family attended the Olympic Trials in Eugene, and Dani Aragon, 14 years old at the time, wrote a description of the trials that appeared in the August 2008 newsletter (page 11).

Thirteen years later, she just competed in the Trials for the first time herself. She showed great skill in winning her preliminary heat and taking third in the semi final. She finished 8th in the final with a new PR of 4:05.09. So impressive to see an athlete mature from fan to top notch competitor!

YRR Donates $1,000 to YES XC

Rim Runners have a long history of supporting YES XC, a cross country meet for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students in our community. We continue our support this year by donating $1,000 to YES XC, which is typically used to cover the insurance cost of the race. The 1 mile race is free for the students and happens in October 2021. Are your kids interested? Yes XC information and registration.

Upcoming Rim Runner Events

Save the Date! We're still planning these events, so stay tuned for more details.

Yellowstone Rim Runners 40th Anniversary Potluck
YRR anniversary logo Running and Friendship 1981-2021
We turn 40 this year! To celebrate we are planning a potluck in the park.

We would like to invite not only our current members, but also members from "back in the day". If you remember some of the members from the 1980s, please email us at We are busy compiling a list.

When: Sunday, September 26. Time TBD
Where: Veteran's Park
Free 3: Trail Trek
Wednesday, September 29
Trail Trek registration is open, but we are still working on the details since a portion of Dover Park is being used for bridge construction.

Clothing Sale
We announced a clothing sale last month and Universal Athletic is busy setting things up for us. Be on the lookout for an email and Facebook posting with the details and a link to order online. We'll have options with our standard logo as well as our 40th anniversary celebration logo.

Trash Cleanup
Sunday, October 3
We'll clean trash from our adopted trail along the Canyon Creek Brewing club run route.

Myers Trail Work
The earthen steps cut into the start of Myers Trail have worn away. Rim Runners are coordinating with the property owner and will be putting in timber steps to improve the grade and usability of the trail. Dave Coppock and Vince Long spent a day prepping the timbers - thank you! Stay tuned for a work day when it cools down a bit.

Flagger Training: Scholarships Still Available

In order to secure a permit from the City of Billings to host a road running race, at least one person on the race committee must have flagger training. The Rim Runners are offering a limited number of scholarships to cover the cost of training. The training is available online and takes 4 hours to complete. We ask that scholarship recipients volunteer on at least one Rim Runner sponsored road race, but this training would be valuable to any local race committee. If you have questions or are interested, please email us at
