Summer transitions into Fall. While Lake Tahoe may be best known for its brilliant blue, the bright gold and reds of autumn are a beauty to behold. It's October, and the aspens, willows, and meadow grasses have started turning on their fall colors.

Lake Tahoe Fall Colors

The air is crisper, mornings have been cooler, and it is definitely feeling like fall in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The leaves have started to change, and it won't be long before we start doing our snow dances in earnest. In the meantime, take a drive, hike, or bike ride around and you’ll see bursts of yellow and gold throughout Lake Tahoe’s South Shore.

Echo Summit Safety Upgrades - Road Construction

As you plan your trip to Lake Tahoe, we want you to be aware that Caltrans has several road projects this summer in the South Shore area.

We recommend you allow extra time to reach your final destination on South Shore.

US Highway 50 over Echo Summit will be under construction this summer as Caltrans and its contractors work to replace the viaduct, built-in 1939.

The replacement will bring the new bridge up to current safety standards. Work on the U.S. Highway 50 Echo Sidehill Viaduct Project has switched back to overnights, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., with reversing one-way traffic control.

A full closure of U.S. Highway 50 over Echo Summit that was planned for mid-October is being postponed until next year. The seven precast bridge girders needed for Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct (bridge) Replacement Project will not be ready in time for an October closure. Instead, contractor Q&D Construction will winterize the job site and come back to finish the project next year. This is a two-year project that the contractor was attempting to accelerate the work on. It is still on track to be finished on time next year.
