Today the Northamptonshire Safeguarding Children Board (NSCB) has published its transition document setting out details of the new Safeguarding Partnership for Northamptonshire. These arrangements begin on 1st July 2019 where we enter a transition period, with full arrangements operational by 1st September. Over the next few months you will start to see some of these changes. If you have any questions regarding the new partnership please e-mail nscb@northamptonshire.gov.uk

2. Local Offer listing

FAO:  All
From: Kathy Forsdyke - Local Offer

During the summer break, the Local Offer team will be auditing all the information on the Local Offer, checking for accuracy to ensure that the website remains current and up to date.

If you are able to, please take the opportunity to look at the local offer for your school/education setting and let us know if any changes are required.

In particular, we need to publish the name of the school’s Senco, and a link to your latest SEN policy. This should be reviewed annually.  You can complete our on-line form to let us know of any changes that need to be made.

We will be sending out a direct e-mail towards the end of the term.  You can request changes to the Local Offer entry at any time during the year.

10. FREE Schools Programme - Born Free’s Great Debate

FAO:    KS2. KS3, KS4 Teachers
From:   Born Free

Launching in September 2019, Born Free’s Great Debate is a new initiative providing teachers with the tools to engage their students in meaningful debates about key wildlife or environmental topics that will affect their future. Students will not only gain knowledge about the debate topic, but also skills that will help them to research, frame and deliver an argument, while reducing their impact on biodiversity and the environment. In year 1 we will be discussing:

PLASTIC: Whose responsibility? Plastics in the environment impact environmental, wildlife and human health. However, who is responsible for their ubiquitous use and poor disposal? If we are to change the world, who needs to lead the charge?

The topic of plastic pollution has many cross-curricular links, with strong links to the Science, English, Geography, Citizenship and SMSC curriculums. While the debate format delivers on the Department for Education’s emphasis on opportunities for pupils to:

  • ‘engage in specific activities that develop speaking and listening skills as well as activities that integrate speaking and listening with reading and writing’
  • ‘develop speaking and listening skills through work that makes cross curricular links with other subjects’

Why get your local schools involved?

Scarily, in 2032 (the year when children who start primary school in 2019 will complete their secondary education), the United Nations estimates there will be an extra one billion people living on a planet that is 1.5°C warmer. Future generations will have the tremendous responsibility of protecting our planet from a catastrophic decline in wildlife from which our ecosystem may never recover. There will be significant implications for wildlife, habitats and people alike. That’s why Born Free’s education team is committed to fostering a love for the natural world, increasing awareness of the threats and challenges facing wildlife and empowering young people to make sustainable choices.

How does it work?

Born Free will provide five key lesson plans (all designed for 1 hr lessons) – a breakdown of objectives and curriculum links for KS2, KS3 and KS4 can be found here - http://bit.ly/2ImIHXg

The full lesson plans will be available to download free of charge at the start of the autumn term from the Born Free website. Teachers can host their internal school debates whenever they would like, however, if they complete all the lessons and the debate by the end of the autumn term then feedback from their students will be included in the official Born Free report to highlight the voice of the younger generation on this topic.
