CHSP growth round for 2020-21 and 2021-22 is live on the grant connect website. The deadline for applications is 2 pm on 5 February – it was originally 25 January (!) but has been extended.

Australia’s next national Census which will be held on Tuesday 10 August 2021. 
Standard 1 of the Aged Care Quality Standards is about dignity and choice for the consumer.
How can an organisation ensure consumers who have difficulty communicating in English are treated with dignity and choice?

Using an interpreter is evidence that the organisation values the consumer’s diverse characteristics and life story, and engages in a way that the client has a voice and decision making power over the services they receive.

Did you know?  Part of the Diversity Advisor role is to support CHSP providers to understand and embed the principles of the National Aged Care Diversity Framework and Action Plans (including CALD below) within their continuous improvement plans.

It's about embedding the Aged Care Diversity Framework
Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (CALD) is one of the nine special need groups identified in the CHSP manual,  aligning with the Aged Care Act (1997).  A specific guide for aged care providers was  developed in  2019 as part of the Aged Care Diversity Framework entitled Actions to Support Older CALD People. An accompanying Guide for Consumers was also developed in support of equitable access to service support.
The  Australian Department of Health National Aged Care Diversity Framework 2017  is a guiding document for service providers, government, peak organisations AND consumers.

One of the Diversity Framework Action Plans: Actions to Support Older CALD People: a Guide for Consumers captures the voice of people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds. It is intended both to help people from CALD backgrounds express their needs when speaking with aged care providers and as a resource to support people working in aged care to understand the perspectives of CALD people

Examples from the action plan guide: 
You can ask a Provider to: Provide you with simple, understandable information on your care, translated into your preferred language where required • Provide you with a Use of Interpreter Services Policy which explains when you are entitled to an interpreter, how to get an interpreter and assist you in getting free interpreting supports where available.

So, it is a useful document when reviewing or developing policies (and see below).
Centre for Cultural Diversity and Ageing
The Centre for Cultural Diversity and Ageing boasts new resources and free training modules. The framework of Inclusive Service Standards (referenced within the Aged Care Quality Standards guide) is background to a collection of practice guides developed to assist with practical implementation e.g. Developing a policy for use of interpreter services. Also, updated communication cards and aged care signage in 20 new languages.

LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care training for Loddon Mallee region
Delivered by Val's LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care
Wed March 24th  1015-1pm

This  session provides an introduction to supporting and working with older LGBTI people. This program is delivered via Zoom and ideal for staff working across CHSP and/or supporting older people in the community or care settings. The session will introduce participants from Loddon Mallee to the following:

– LGBTI communities, terminology, definitions & history

– Key aspects of LGBTI ageing

- An introduction to LGBTI inclusive practice

This interactive sessions is delivered via Zoom - the Zoom invitations will be sent only to registered participants prior to the training session.

This session is funded through CHSP sector support and development, and open to a maximum of 4 participants per organisation in Loddon Mallee
