TT News - McCowan Course
This Saturday June 25th the TT is at the McCowan Road course at 9:00 AM. Last night I was informed by the Holt FM Church that they will be using their parking lot occasionally on Saturday mornings for a Farmer's Market to support food banks. This will impact our schedule as I will have to relocate the July 2nd TT. As variety is the spice of life, I propose that we use the Pottageville course as an alternate to McCowan when there are conflicts in the schedule. I will have to notify the OCA, so let me know what you think of using Pottageville.

Trophies Wanted
This year after 2 years of Covid lockdowns and the resulting economic disaster, it looks like we will be able to award trophies. All those in possession of trophies are requested to contact me to arrange delivery.

Road Race News - Ron Near Memorial Race - Minimum Field
This Sunday June 26th the Ron Near Memorial Race is scheduled for the Sandford race course. The race is in the schedule and there have been requests to reschedule it and others to keep it. As it is this weekend, I decided to keep it. However I need a minimum field of 12 riders to run the event. Pre-registration is absolutely required. The sign in sheet on the Road Race section is ready. For this event cash will be accepted at the race instead of e-transfers.
Secondly rain is forecast for Sunday. If there are thunderstorms, I will announce the cancellation by 7:00 AM Sunday morning. If the race is well attended, I will look for opportunities for additional road races. Below for your information is an article by Andrew Darke about Ron Near.

Ron Near Memorial Race – Sunday June 26, 9:00 AM, Sandford Course

Ron Near was a long time club member who passed away suddenly in 2016. He lived in downtown Toronto but liked the Eagles so much he would travel up every week for the Saturday morning ride. He particularly liked participating in our Club and Interclub Australian Pursuit race series, which are handicapped according to ability and therefore both competitive and fun for all.

Ron was the ideal racer for club level racing– or “grass roots racing” as we like to call it and we did we did battle many times in handicap group 2, which for most of our illustrious race careers, was always the slowest group.

He was fiercely competitive but always safety first and never a poor looser. His skill was spinning up the hills often leaving me and others in Group 2 behind but on a flat course he did not have a killer top end speed so from time to time I might get the better of him. I never beat him over many years of racing on the hilly Beeton course until the last day we raced it together in 2016.The next day he entered a Mountain Bike Race at Hardwood and sadly died shortly after it. As we often say “he died doing what he loved”.

For those of you who do not know the object of the group pursuit format, groups are assigned based on ability and start time is determined by a time handicap calculated according to a carefully guarded secret formula requiring expert knowledge of differential calculus. Everyone works together within their group. If no other group catches the group, then it becomes a race within the group to the finish line and if the group is caught before the finish line then riders are free to join in and work (or not!) with the faster group – again, until it becomes an individual race to the finish.

Ron would have liked nothing better than to continue club racing into his late 70's and 80's and I am sure he would encourage all members to try these events and keep alive the spirit of grass roots racing for which the Eagles are renowned.

Lets get out there and race on Sunday June 26  – yes there is a real trophy to be won!
Hope to see MANY there.
