Dear CORE Champion,

As we close out the unique 2019/2020 school year, we have quite a bit to reflect on and look forward to in the future. Over the last few months, we have set up an emergency relief fund and provided gift cards to Walmart and local grocery stores for our families, created an extensive resource guide for our families and the community, and delivered chromebooks to our Scholars. Our specialists have also consistently reached out to our families at least once a week. On top of that, we pivoted our after-school programming to virtual learning through Google Classroom, where we have continued to educate, empower and enrich throughout the last few months. Never has our motto of "CORE WE CAN"
proven more relevant than during this challenging time, and never has our CORE team been more determined to provide exceptional programming and resources to our Scholars and their families.
Without skipping a beat, our talented CORE specialists transitioned CORE's after-school programming to a virtual format through Google Classroom. Over the course of 6 weeks, over 90% of our Scholars regularly participated in CORE's online programming modules, carefully designed around promoting positive self-identity and mental health in our current environment. For the first few weeks, our dedicated specialists gently eased our Scholars back into programming through the introduction of CORE's mindfulness and character education curriculum, as well as student-generated online clubs. Soon after, our specialists brought in a virtual Career We Can program (see below for more information), a new online resume workshop, and cultural enrichment. By the end of week three, programming was back in full swing with the addition of academic programming and tutoring, as well as other enrichment programs. When the Scholars were asked what areas of programming impacted them the most, the majority felt that character education, mindfulness, and the resume workshop greatly helped them through this trying time.

As we venture into summer, specialists will continue to check-in and work with our CORE Scholars and families. We will also be providing a week of Summer programming in July before the school year begins in August. Regardless of the decision to reopen schools at the beginning of the school year, our CORE team is prepared to provide excellent virtual or in-person programming for our Scholars.
Two vital components of educating and empowering our Scholars are to prepare them for college and their careers, and for our Scholars to understand the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community. CORE's Career We Can program utilizes strength and interest assessments, hands-on experiences, and guest speakers to help guide our Scholars' interests and equip them for the future. We are incredibly excited to be able to bring our guest speaker series online, and we are currently seeking more speakers to share their experiences and advice with our Scholars. Volunteer speakers can record themselves speaking to the camera, or they can be interviewed and recorded by a CORE team member. Please check out one of our wonderful CORE Champions below, Keith Fiandra, to see what participating in the program entails. During these unknown times, we recognize that it is incredibly important to give back and thank those on the front lines. Our Scholars were recently given a generous donation specifically to use towards giving back to the community. As a collective group, they chose to provide coffee and tea for our local heroes at UMC hospital. On Friday, June 12, fifteen of our Scholars met bright and early at UMC to provide over 600 cups of Grouchy John's coffee and tea to the hardworking staff at UMC. It is important that as a team we practice what we preach. Throughout these last few months, we have worked together to ensure that we are continually supporting each other and working  on our own mental health. This week marks our week of gratitude. Throughout our social media platforms, you will find messages as to how CORE has personally impacted each of us and what we are grateful for. Check our #GRATITUDE Instagram story collection to catch up on all of the great content from this week.

As the new school year approaches it is imperative that we continue to support the critical work being done by our specialists. You can join us in the action at this August our first virtual fundraiser. The fundraiser will consist of delicious food, fabulous entertainment, and interactive games. Stay tuned for more information regarding this exciting event in the near future.

As always, we hope that you and your family are safe and well. We are so grateful for your support, and we look forward to continuing our work with you. Together, we will keep working hard, being kind, and doing good things.
