Dear members and friends

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year 2020, and to thank you for being with us and for supporting our work during past years. 

In this newsletter you can find some of our activities from last quarter of 2019.

In 2020 we continue our mission to address intersectional discrimination at EU level and advance Muslim women’s rights through influential advocacy, a strong network of women’s organisations and our evidence-based expertise in Muslim women realities.

EVENTS

Advocacy Training for Civil Society

8 November 2019, Brussels

EFOMW organised a workshop entitled “Advocacy Training for Civil Society”. The main aim of the training was to enhance Muslim women civil society organisations’ knowledge of advocacy and tools that can be used to counteract, challenge and fight against the intersectional discriminations they face.


Workshop also aimed to improve participants’ understanding of how advocacy relates to challenging and combating intersectional discrimination. Read more here

EFOMW General Assembly 2019
9-10 November 2019, Brussels

General assembly focused on development and strengthening of EFOMW and its members, and how to move forward in a changing political environment in Europe. We also had pleasure to welcome two new member organisations to EFOMW’s network: Hekva from Turkey, and Amal Ry from Finland

OSCE/ODIHR Roundtable on Intersectionality and Hate Crime
17 October Copenhagen, Denmark

An expert roundtable with scholars, experts and practitioners working in the areas of hate crimes, gender and intersectionality was organised in order to discuss and get the deeper understanding of how intersectionality is applied to hate crimes.
It examined how using the theory of intersectionality can benefit hate crime prevention and response as well as evaluate its potential impact on gender equality.

Towards the post-2019 gender equality strategy
12 November in Brussels

EFOMW participated in a workshop ‘Towards the post-2019 gender equality strategy’ organized by the European Commission. 

We took part in discussions on women in media and women in labour market, and advocated for more participation / inclusion of women from minorities and Muslim women in these areas. We also highlighted the challenges faced by Muslim women and exchanged good practices.

Open Your Mind
14 November in Brussels

EFOMW participated in the presentation of “Open Your Mind” project which took place in European Parliament.

“UP&UP -UPscaling trainers’ and teacher’s competencies on gender stereotype to UPscaling the awareness among young people and fight the gender based violence” is a project that would be define a new methodology and a training package available online that aims to increase skill’s educators, teachers, tutors, trainers and citizenship skills of young on a specific topic concerning respect for diversity, with particular reference to gender differences.

PUBLICATIONS

Concerns over Islamophobic comments by the designate EU official for Democracy and Demography
3 October 

As a part of the Coalition Against Islamophobia, EFOMW denounces the mocking comments the Vice-President- designate for Democracy and Demography posted in August 2018 on her Facebook page
