Issue 3 - October 2017
It's Issue number 3 and we’re delighted by the feedback we’ve had regarding this new legal newsletter.

As you know, we like to keep things short and snappy, highlighting matters, which are quick and easy to mentally digest to aid in the daily running of your firm.

This issue we’re looking at research from two different sources – one that shows regional law firms are falling behind their city rivals and another, which suggests firms are investing in old style marketing strategies, such as print, despite broadly being aware digitally focused options are more effective.

Also, we
ask :”Are all the rules and regulations making us less productive?”  Yves Morieux has some answers.

Anyway, we’re always open to debate, so let us know your thoughts and opinions.

Regional law firms need bolder approach as they fall behind city big boys

A report has shown that almost two-thirds of regional law firms are failing to meet their performance targets, with 40% saying equity partner profits are falling.

For regional firms, this is the key finding of a new benchmarking survey by accountants, Crowe Clark Whitehill.

Whilst many regional firms struggle, the City is ignoring the threat posed by Brexit, with over 90% of practices reporting increasing revenue and four in ten saying partner profits are up by over 10%.

The survey showed that in the regions, one in five firms saw revenue fall in the latest financial year and only 28% saw income rise by over 10%, compared to 41% in 2016 and 52% two years ago.

One of the US’s leading business consultants, French-born Yves Morieux gives us a fascinating talk about how we may all be hampering our efforts to succeed by too much emphasis on regulations, and how it’s dramatically affecting the productivity of the developed world.

White Paper's conclusion of law firms using 'tactics of yesteryear' hard to dispute

Many lawyers will be aware of a new report accusing SME law firms of being behind the times in their methods of attracting clients.

A white paper by First4Lawyers condemned the SME solicitor marketplace for investing their marketing budgets into old-style strategies they know are often a bad use of spend, rather than exploring new technologies that are already taking hold in other sectors.

The survey of 100 firms also showed that most decisions about where to invest are made by senior management or board members without the marketing department’s input.
