The season bubbles up
for a grand stand finish.

Having secured their third good win on the bounce at Ironsides on the 12th, the 1st XV are geared up to welcome London Welsh to Monkton Lane this coming Saturday for our penultimate home game of the season.  This one-time Premiership club is re-building and lies but one place behind league leaders Camberley.   However, as proved last Saturday with Padovani's last-gasp try after Capuozzo's scintillating break, the Welsh are beatable.  Furthermore, though we came second in the season's previous encounter, it was far from a walk over for the Welsh. It should be a cracking game!

We are creating a festival atmosphere for this special match - set to be played in gorgeous spring-time conditions.  There will be a curtain raiser match featuring our Under 11s tackling their counterparts from London Welsh and, of course, the traditional supporters' lunch.

The main match kicks off at 3.00pm so we'll gather at 1.15pm to dine at 1.30pm.  Book your seat(s) by emailing chairman@farnhamrugby.org.  Buy your £20 ticket at the bar on the day using a card (no cash) and the vendor's receipt will act as your entry into the raffle of fabulous prizes to be drawn after you have enjoyed a hot lunch, cheese and coffee.

The lunch and match are generously sponsored by the club's Principal Partner Fish Saltus - Farnham's premier wealth management experts.

On the day, the Vikings - who haven't enjoyed a game for a while - travel to Richmond and there's much more to enjoy on Sunday......

Strong work in attack and defence and not inconsiderable skills had the Academy overcome Old Wimbledonian Warriors 21-3 in semi final of the senior section of the Quins Cup on 13/3/22.

That win set up this Sunday's final of the President's Cup against Wimbledon, Kick Off 2.30pm at Monkton Lane.

Farnham started the match strongly but despite dominating possession couldn't break through OWW's feisty defence. Eventually the sustained attack from the boys paid off with a good move off a scrum on the 5 meter line when Nemesio Qiatabua was prevented scoring in the corner by a high tackle, which resulted in a penalty try. Despite continued dominance of possession Farnham failed to extend their lead and the visitors slotted a penalty just before half time leaving the score at 7-3 at the end of the half.

Farnham continued to put pressure on OWW's defence early in the second half but couldn't extend the lead. The visitors then got their attack going testing the Farnham defence which held held strong and frustrated the visitors and resulted in one of their lads seeing red, reducing them to 14 men. Farnham used the extra man to pile pressure on and captain Joe Brockman made a great break down the touch line to score under the posts. 14-3 Farnham. Tom Humphreys hacked a loose ball through late on and, with an impressive turn of speed, won the foot race to touch down the try. Stan Platt converted the try sealing the win 21-3 and earning the boys a well deserved place in the Final

Sunday we host Quins Cup Finals.
Academy face Wimbledon in President's Cup.

This Sunday the club is hosting the U16 and U18 Quins Cup finals. There will be total of six games played - three KO at 12.30 and three at 14.30 - the headline of which is our Academy in the President's Cup final against Wimbledon - who we previously overcame in the group games along with the notable scalps of Dorking and Richmond

The game on the first pitch in front of a full balcony will be the last meaningful match of the season for this year's Academy and obviously a big day for the Under 18 lads after 11 years of representing Farnham as a junior.

(Editors Note: Its worth noting that the U17 element of the Academy is the first to start and finish its junior rugby journey at Monkton Lane.)

Steve Baird comments, "In the early years the Under 18's were probably bottom of the top quartile and outgunned by the likes of London Irish and Guildford. However they always had incredible bravery, spirit and togetherness.

Every year they improved and at Under 15 they won the Surrey Championship coming back from 23-3 down at London Irish.

The following year they backed it up by winning the Under 16 Championship in a brutal slug fest at Monkton Lane against their other nemesis, Guildford.

When the pandemic hit, they had just qualified for the final of Quins Cup after another huge comeback win.

The year group has obviously been disrupted by the pandemic but largely it has survived intact and is complimented by another good bunch from the Under 17s."

This season they have again won the Surrey Cup and now the Quins Cup offers them a great opportunity to do the double - their last hurrah as Farnham Juniors and a fabulous springboard to their senior rugby careers..

Get down to cheer them on.

Girls show the Academy the way.

The Girls U15s played Wimbledon in their final Waterfall Cup match on Sunday. Having recently had a close ‘friendly’ against them, a competitive match was anticipated. Farnham, the home side, started strongly with 2 tries from direct running prop, Ella, the first after a long break by speeding centre, Mimi. Wimbledon came back with an interception try just before half time and another try shortly after to stay very much in the game. Tries by flying flanker Eva and dancing winger, Polly, put the result beyond doubt. Captain and fly half, Phoebe converted 3 out of 4 tries. The squad of 20 players all contributed in what was probably the team’s best performance to date; an impressive 26-12 victory in the end.
