Hayes Valley Art Works

A Community Creation Space

With beautiful weather and longer days, afternoons in April at Hayes Valley Art Works have been truly delightful.

I really hope you will be able to join us for our Neighborhood Design Summit on Saturday, April 16th starting at 1PM. It will be a wonderful chance to meet and collaborate in a participatory workshop with your neighbors and fellow artists.

I’d also like to ask, whether or not you can make it, to please share this invitation widely - more voices contributing to a rich discussion!

Thank you for being a part of our community - hope to see you soon!

Placemaking Panel
Video Highlights
We were honored to host Mark Lakeman (Founder, City Repair) and a terrific panel of placemaking experts in March, and we have assembled a library of video highlights - check it out!
Featured Artist: Sonja Hinrichsen
Sonja participated in our recent "Convening of Interested Artists", and we are thrilled that she is considering participatory projects for Hayes Valley Art Works!
"In my artwork I examine environments – urban, industrial as well as natural environments. I am interested in the intersection between place – city or nature – and human perception and utilization thereof, throughout history."
Featured Program: The Purple Bin
Hayes Valley Art Works is a Zero Waste site, which means that we ask all participants to "carry out" whatever they "carry in" including disposable coffee cups and other refuse - we do not have Recology service for the site. We are actively engaged in soil-building through composting, however, so you are encouraged to deposit FRUIT AND VEGETABLE WASTE ONLY in the Purple Bin - we will make sure to transform it into healthy soil...please take your paper cup with you, but leave the apple core with us!

New Artist Community Coordinator!

We are pleased to announce that Emma Spertus has joined the leadership team at Hayes Valley Art Works.  Emma is an artist, teacher, arts facilitator, and founding director of Real Time & Space, a collective studio and residency program in Oakland.  She was also a founding member of Rock Paper Scissors Collective in Oakland, and recently served as a Program Manager for Intersection for the Arts in San Francisco. We are thrilled that she is participating in our Community Creation Space!
Please direct interested artists and organizations to Emma at

Merchant Spotlight - Ladle & Leaf

Thank you to Ladle & Leaf for their support of our April 1st "Stage-Raising" party!  They provided delicious salad and sandwiches for the volunteers who helped level and prepare the area where we are constructing a stage and dance floor. Yummy community engagement!
