Children's Events
There is an event on Thursday 2 August specifically for children.
Come to "Meet the Victorians at the Seaside" a children’s (and adults') craft and activity event on Thursday Aug 2nd from 10.00 am until 12.00 noon.

Join the Radstock Museum volunteers for a morning of seaside themed art and crafts, drama and singing. Lots of fun and an ice cream included!!!

Child admission is £2.50 each child: this will include the ice cream. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

One adult entry per child will be FREE and additional adults will pay £2.50.

The Museum tea room will be open for delicious cakes and hot and cold drinks and the Museum Shop will be open for mementoes and pocket money toys.

The Museum exhibitions and galleries will be closed during the Victorian Event.

And we have two other longer running events, one for the under fives and one for older children.

For the under 5s we have a Fossil Hunt where our Ammonites have now been joined by Baby Ammonites.

Search the Museum and try to find all 14. There are also unpainted large and small ammonites in our shop, so you can take one home to decorate yourself.

Older children can join us on a Dragonfly Hunt.

A fun, self-led, activity for museum visitors during the Summer Holidays.

Will you take on the challenge to find all 15 dragonflies, complete the anagram quiz and claim a small prize?

Talk to the volunteer Steward when you come to the Museum during the school holidays.

The Shop
Radstock's Heritage
To coincide with our exhibition commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of Radstock Co-operative Society, we have a display in the shop of books and gifts celebrating Radstock's heritage of mining, the market, railways and Radco.

New DVD for Sale
The S & D Reborn: Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust at Midsomer Norton

The DVD, on sale in the shop for £9.95,  tells the story of how the Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust has transformed Midsomer Norton Station, abandoned after the S & D was closed by Beeching, into a working railway once again. A mile of track has been re-laid by hand and steam-hauled trains have returned to the S & D, thanks to the efforts of a hardworking band of dedicated volunteers.

Artefacts for Sale
We also have some interesting donated mining related items for sale:

A bust of Mr Amos Church who was a Somerset miner for 52 years - price £10,

A large Wedgwood mug commemorating the bicentenary of the birth of Sir Humphrey Davy (1778-1829) the inventor of the miner's safety lamp, price £7.50

And two miner's watch protectors, probably early 1900s, both with damage commensurate with use underground, price £25 each.

Radco Charity of the Year
We are delighted to have been selected as a Radco Charity of the Year and would like to thank the members of the Radstock Co-operative Society for their support.
Kilmersdon Colliery Time-clock
The Museum Society has purchased this time-clock, which stands over a metre tall, one of the four that were in use at Kilmersdon Colliery from the 1930s to its closure in 1973.

This type of time-clock or to give it its proper name a Dial or Radial Recorder, was invented by a Scot, Alexander Day, in Glasgow in 1888 and was made until the 1930s. There are a number of design variations of the number dial, but fundamentally, all models have the same basic appearance. They varied in size to accommodate from 50 to 200 workers. This particular clock was made in 1918/19.

It is being restored as it has very bad woodworm infestation in its base, the time stamping mechanism is dirty and needs lubrication and the clock movement is very worn so this is with Symon Boyd of Timsbury Clocks for overhaul.

We would welcome the help of someone who is good with small brass cabinet door locks which require flat steel keys like garage door keys, since both side doors do not lock.

We hope to have it on display for the Annual Miners' Re-Union in September.

New Addition to the Research Library

We have just added “Secure the Shadow” to our Research Library.

The book is a directory of Somerset photographers and their work so will be particularly useful for people researching old picture postcards. To visit to carry out Research please click here.

It includes a DVD with biographies of the photographers and over 1500 images of their work. Local photographers such as Steggles, Purnell, Mundy, White, etc are all represented.

For anyone wanting their own copy, it is only available from the publishers, The Somerset & Dorset Family History Society, and can be ordered via their website at a cost of £14.10 including postage.

Help from Our Partners
We are very grateful to Thatcher + Hallam Solicitors, one of our local partners, for their sponsorship of an advertisement for volunteers in the local press and also for providing a banner to publicise membership of the Museum Society.

Members of the Museum Society benefit from various discounts at T + H, details can be found on the Museum website here.
The exhibition at Radstock Museum celebrates 150 years of Radstock Co-operative Society’s service to the community. If ends on August 30th.
The exhibition includes a wide range of posters and artefacts illustrating Radstock Co-operative and Industrial Society’s place in the lives of the people in our area and has been compiled with assistance from many people who have worked in or been served by RADCO in its various shops and other facilities over many years.

There is also the opportunity to buy a book specially written for the anniversary, on sale in the Museum shop.
