Featured Author: James Patterson

I feel that there are two very important reasons to feature James Patterson in our newsletter. Number one is that Patterson is the best selling author in the world and holds the Guinness World Record for the most #1 New York Times bestsellers. He was also the first person to sell 1 million e-books. The second, and primary reason he is being featured, is because of his amazing philanthropy and contributions to the cause of reading. He is especially dedicated to encouraging young people to become lifetime readers.

Patterson published his first novel, The Thomas Berryman Number in 1976, after being refused by 31 publishers. It won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. In 1993 Along Came a Spider, his first novel featuring Alex Cross, was his first New York Times bestseller. Patterson has written 147 novels since 1976. 114 of these books landed on the New York Times bestseller list. His novels account for one in every 17 hardcover books sold in the united States. Here at the bookstore we always joke about Patterson coming out with a new book every week, and it doesn't seem that far from the truth! He has sold more books that Stephen King, John Grisham and Dan Brown combined. He started writing two popular children's book series Maximum Ride and Middle School in 2011. He continued with several other juvenile series (I, Funny, House of Robots, Treasure Hunter, etc.) and he was the first author to have number one titles on the adult and children's bestseller list at the same time.

What really impresses me about James Patterson is his dedication to reading and especially in encouraging children to read. He has donated over one million books to students in the poorest schools, he has donated over $7 million to school libraries and over $2 million to independent bookstores. Hey, maybe we should hit him up for a grant! He has also established over 400 teacher and education scholarships and donated over 1 million books to U.S. soldiers. Patterson established ReadKiddoRead.com, a website designed to help parents and teachers get kids excited about reading. His website was the winner of the National Book Foundation's Innovations in Reading Prize and the American Library Association's Great Websites for Kids.

Patterson has also been acknowledged for his philanthropy by being presented the National Book Foundation's Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community.

I don't know if you are a fan of James Patterson's novels or not but to my thinking he is a man worthy of my respect.
