Image Welcome to our March 2016 Newsletter!

This month we look towards the benefit changes and list which ones are currently set to be affected from April 2016. We’ve also got news on the latest update to our Benefits Calculator, a real life story as well as our usual benefits and grants update.

We are also very keen on hearing from any carers who have received help from us and who might be willing to share their story as part of our upcoming benefits campaign.

It would involve filming an interview with you that we’d use for a short campaign video and taking some photos for our campaign website and posters.

Share your story with us.

This month we have listed the main changes that are planned, and next month we will have a detailed breakdown of all the changes and who they will affect.

Local Housing Benefit cap delayed for a year

The government has announced that it is delaying its plans to cap the amount of Housing Benefit for new social tenants to the relevant Local Housing Allowance rates.

This would mean social sector tenants in supported accommodation would have their housing benefit paid in line with private sector tenants who receive the same benefit. Local Housing Allowance rates to assess Housing Benefit for social tenants in supported accommodation would will still come into force from April 2018.

However, the planned measure will now apply to social tenants who sign a new or re-let tenancy agreement from April 2017, rather than from April 2016.

Real life: Your Stories

This month our case study comes from Ruth. She is in her sixties, suffers from ill health and is unable to work. Her husband is retired and is also her full-time carer.

Ruth’s daughter had often mentioned Turn2us but Ruth had never previously thought it was relevant to her. However, she decided to look at our website to see what help was available.

Study finds northern cities struggling

City leaders in northern cities and towns have been urged to create opportunities for people and places that have been left behind in the Government’s Northern Powerhouse strategy.

The call comes as a new Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) report reveals 10 of the UK’s top 12 struggling cities are based in the north.
