Violence Free Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day is the day we honor those we’ve lost. As our city battles the coronavirus pandemic we must not forget the pandemic of gun violence. The response to COVID-19 has brought out the best in humanity as so many of us have bonded together to support our fellow Chicagoans.

On Memorial Day, we will celebrate the kickoff to summer by Remembering the Ones we loss. Let us spend the week leading up to this celebration by Remembering the Living. May 17 – 23 is Unity Week. Chicago Police, West Side public schools, and numerous community organizations and elected officials will be out conducting pop ups throughout the Westside to distribute PPE, food items, and education on coronavirus precautions and violence prevention. As we fight the double pandemic, our goal is a murder-free Memorial Day weekend.

Our joint efforts culminate on May 23 with the Unity Day Vehicle Parade through West Side neighborhoods. Residents can view the display of classic cars and floats from their porches while socially distancing and making sure all is counted in the 2020 Census!
