Creekwatcher Currents: August 2016

Can you believe it? We're now in late August, and that means that we'll begin the transition from summer to autumn soon. Within the next month, we'll wrap up the Bacterial Source Tracking project, and the bulk of outreach programs will conclude for the year. Chlorophyll a sampling will conclude at the end of September; we currently have three sampling periods remaining where we'll collect those samples.

We will be participating in the Woodland Ferry Festival (let's hope for better weather than last year!) and will also be assisting with the annual Coastal Cleanup at Roaring Point in Nanticoke. If anyone wants to carpool with me to Roaring Point, I'd be happy to give you a ride. I have two seats left in my car.

The Poplar Island trip is now full. I will be sending an email to participants separately with details, including the carpool.

Second notice--I will be on vacation from September 27 through October 8. I will return in time for the October 9/10 sampling period. If you need supplies, please let me know asap so that we can take care of needs prior to my being absent. Other staff may be scheduled for autumn field trips during the early October time frame, so staff availability during that time period may be very limited. I will update you about specifics once field trip dates have been confirmed.

I also have information about the CW10 Committee below. If you'd like to have more a direct role in making Year Ten as awesome as possible, please let me know. We'll be setting up an initial meeting soon.

Lastly, I've linked to some Facebook photo albums we posted recently and to 2015 Nanticoke River Report Card launch media coverage. Thanks to all of you who attended!

As always, if you need anything, please contact me. Happy Creekwatching!

CW10 Committee

WOW! Can you believe it? 2017 will bring the tenth full season of the Nanticoke Creekwatchers Program. This is a pretty big deal, and I want to make sure that everyone knows. Of course, since we won’t be releasing a Ten Year Report Card until 2018, that means that the next two years are very special milestone years for us. Just as I can’t run the program without you, I won’t be able to do the very best that I can to make these next two years what they could or should be without you.

Accordingly, I would like to invite you, as a Creekwatcher, to participate in our CW10 Committee. The Committee will assist in planning outreach, developing the Ten Year report card, revamping our annual Wade In event into a fantastic river celebration, and discussing ways that we can better inform, educate, and celebrate this fantastic program.

The CW10 Committee will assist with:
  • Building an off-season outreach plan geared toward promoting the Nanticoke Creekwatchers Program and recruiting new volunteers.
  • Planning a festival-like Wade In that will be held on a Saturday next summer.
  • Developing and exploiting press relationships.
  • Envisioning the 10YR Report Card, including internet components.
  • Creating creative outreach projects, such as videos, that will spread the word about Creekwatchers, water quality, backyard conservation practices, etc.
  • Developing the report card distribution list.
  • Making sure that our tenth year is as awesome as possible!
My preference is to start holding in-person meetings in August and to continue meeting every other month (or as needed). We will also communicate via email, as I know everyone is busy.

I’d like a well-represented committee, with Creekwatchers in MD and DE serving in nearly equal numbers. My goal is to have a committee of at least four and no more than eight. If you would like to sign up for CW10, please contact me, and I’ll add you to the list.
